CLEVELAND, OH – Charenton Theater Company Producing Director Mindy Childress and Co-Producer and ensemble member Brian Pedaci are pleased to announce the fifth annual summer production, under the banner The Urban Tour: Clifford Odets’ 20th century socio-political indictment of unions and the blue collar working person, Waiting For Lefty. As is the tradition with Charenton, the play will travel to locations all around Northeast Ohio, culminating in a performance at the arts and technology festival Ingenuity. Additionally, all performances are free and open to the public (donations at the door greatly appreciated). Directed by Cleveland Play House Education Director William Hoffman, The Urban Tour is generously supported through an ACE Grant from the Cuyahoga County Board of Commissioners. Locations include Lincoln Park, Voinovich Park, Cudell Recreation Center, Case Western Reserve Campus (Bellflower Road behind The Thwing Center), Superior Viaduct, and Fat Fish Blue (as part of
the Ingenuity Festival). Performance dates are July 29 through September 2. All performances except the September 2 date are at 8:00 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Odets’ 1935 play bookends at a big city union meeting, where blue-collar taxi drivers move toward a strike. Fusing naturalistic and expressionistic theatre styles into an episodic tale told mostly in flashback, Waiting For Lefty is set immediately following the great stock market crash of 1929. The audience is drawn in by a speech from one of the big business leaders, Harry Fatt. From this speech unfolds a story of proletarian, professional and artistic classes battling the economic aristocracy. In addition to Fatt, Odets introduces blue collar taxi driver Joe and his wife Edna as they struggle over supporting their family; Industrialist Fayette attempting to manipulate the lowly lab assistant Miller; Florence and Sid, caught in economic hardship, trying to let their feelings blossom through it all; as well as union spies, Communists, and evil corporate greed. Will the working class rise up and cause a revolution?
The Urban Tour production of Waiting For Lefty crisscrosses Cleveland, with audiences given the chance to see the play in a variety of neighborhoods (all performances are at 8:00 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; July 29 and 30 at Lincoln Park in Tremont; August 4, 5, and 6 at Voinovich Park (located next to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum) on the E. 9th St. Pier; August 11, 12, and 13 at Cudell Recreation Center on West Blvd.; August 18, 19, and 20 at Case Western Reserve Campus -- Bellflower Road behind The Thwing Center); August 25, 26, and 27 on the Superior Viaduct (home to Spaces Art Gallery and new housing developments just off Ohio City); culminating in a special performance at the Ingenuity Festival (venue: loading dock of Fat Fish Blue at the corner of Prospect and Ontario) on September 2 at 11:00 p.m. Patrons are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to make for a more comfortable experience. Admission is free; donations accepted at the door.
Clifford Odets (Playwright), the son of Jewish immigrants, was born in Philadelphia on July 18, 1906. He left school at the age of 17 to become an actor. After a series of small parts working in the theatre and on radio, Odets helped form the Group Theatre in New York. Members held left-wing political views and wanted to produce plays that dealt with important social issues. Odets, who joined the American Communist Party in 1934, had his first play, Waiting for Lefty, produced in 1935. The play that dealt with trade union corruption was an immediate success. With his next two plays, Awake and Sing! and Till the Day I Die, Odets established himself as a champion of the underprivileged. After the production of Paradise Lost (1935), Odets accepted a lucrative offer to become a film screenwriter, and while in Hollywood met and married the actress Louise Rainer. However, he continued to write plays, and with Golden Boy (1937), he had his greatest commercial success. This was followed by
Rocket to the Moon (1938), Night Music (1940), Clash By Night (1941), The Big Knife (1949), and The Country Girl (1950). Investigated by Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1953, Odets argued that he had never been under the influence of the American Communist Party and his work had been based on his deep sympathy for the working classes. Unlike many writers and actors who had been members of the party, Odets was not blacklisted and continued to work in Hollywood. This included the screenplay for the acclaimed Sweet Smell of Success (1957). Odets died on August 18, 1963.
The cast includes Allan Byrne (Professor of Theatre at Cleveland State University, member of the Charenton Board of Directors), Magdalyn Donnelly (CPT’s Stone Cold Dead Serious), Daniel McElhaney (Dobama Theatre), Andrew Narten (longtime Charenton company member), Jarred Nichols, Amy Pawlukiewicz, Brian Pedaci (Co-Founder of Bad Epitaph Theatre Company), Mark Rabant (Bad Epitaph Theatre Company), Lelund Durond Thompson, Bailey Varness, Noah Varness, and Zev Valancey (Dobama Theatre).
Bill Hoffman (Director) currently serves as the education director at The Cleveland Play House. He directed Charenton’s award-winning production of Glen Garry Glen Ross. Hoffman has been directing for over 30 years and is well versed in material from the first half of the 20th century American canon.
The design team working with Hoffman to bring Waiting For Lefty to life includes production designer Perren Hedderson, costume designer Rachel Abbey, properties designer Cassie Williams, production stage manager John Boomershine, and technical assistant Tatiana Roberts.

<P class=MsoBodyText style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><FONT size=3><SPAN style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'">Clifford Odets (<B style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal">Playwright</B>), the son of Jewish immigrants, was born in </SPAN><st1:City><st1:place><SPAN style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'">Philadelphia</SPAN></st1:place></st1:City><SPAN style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'"> on </SPAN><st1:date Year="1906" Day="18" Month="7"><SPAN style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'">July 18, 1906</SPAN></st1:date><SPAN style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'">. He left school at the age of 17 to become an actor. After a series of small parts working in the theatre and on radio, Odets helped form the Group Theatre in </SPAN><st1:State><st1:place><SPAN
style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'">New York</SPAN></st1:place></st1:State><SPAN style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'">. Members held left-wing political views and wanted to produce plays that dealt with important social issues. Odets, who joined the American Communist Party in 1934, had his first play, <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Waiting for Lefty</I>, produced in 1935. The play that dealt with trade union corruption was an immediate success. With his next two plays, <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Awake and Sing!</I> and <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Till the Day I Die</I>, Odets established himself as a champion of the underprivileged.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>After the production of <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Paradise Lost</I> (1935), Odets accepted a lucrative offer to become a film screenwriter, and while in
</SPAN><st1:City><st1:place><SPAN style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'">Hollywood</SPAN></st1:place></st1:City><SPAN style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'"> met and married the actress Louise Rainer. However, he continued to write plays, and with <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Golden Boy</I> (1937), he had his greatest commercial success. This was followed by <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Rocket to the Moon</I> (1938), <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Night Music</I> (1940), <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Clash By Night</I> (1941), <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">The Big Knife</I> (1949), and <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">The Country Girl</I> (1950).<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Investigated by Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1953, Odets argued that he had never been under the influence of the American
Communist Party and his work had been based on his deep sympathy for the working classes.
