Waterloo Street Festival comes back to life as Art on the ‘Loo
Arts Collinwood presents its third Waterloo Arts Festival for North Collinwood, now bigger and better.
A two-day arts celebration Sat, Aug. 20, 11-7 and Sun, Aug. 21, 11-5

The expanded annual festival, now dubbed Art on the ‘Loo in a tongue-in-cheek spirit of irreverent good fun, will take place in the heart of the historic Waterloo business district and feature art, music, food and entertainment to attract art and fun lovers from throughout Northeast Ohio to this reviving neighborhood.

A big focus will be on the arts. There will be 3 art exhibits (The opening group show of the new Arts Collinwood Gallery in the renovated building at the corner of E. 156th and Waterloo; Karen Novak’s rock photography show in the lobby of the Beachland Ballroom; and an outdoor sculpture garden at the Zaller Building, near E. 160 and Waterloo) and 7 public art installations in various vacant spaces throughout the district featuring such renowned artists as Tom Ericcson, Mike Moritz, Beth Wolfe, Benjamin Bellas, Abe Abelvido, Stephen Manka, and the team of Lazlo Gyorki and Abe Bruckman.

A variety of topnotch local music acts will also be a big part of the festival. The main stage will kick off at 11 am on Saturday with the mighty sounds of the Prayer Warriors, led by Herb Thomas. And will rotate every hour from rock to country to gospel and jazz. (Band Schedule is attached). There will also be street performers strolling the district between the main stage bands to keep things moving.

The Beachland Ballroom will host a rock-n-roll flea market in their ballroom on Saturday from 11 AM-4 PM and on Sunday the ballroom will host an independent film festival curated by 20,000 Leagues Under the Industry from 12:30-3:30 PM. The theme will be rock and roll with several shorts preceding a first-time feature by Toronto filmmaker Paula Tiberius called "Goldirocks," about a groupie who starts her own band.

Street vendors will include area artists and craftspeople featuring jewelry, photography, poster art, stained glass, fine art paintings, iron work, mosaics and more. Several booths with explain the history of the neighborhood, including Euclid Beach Now, a group working to restore the old Euclid Beach Carrousel to its original site in what is now the national park. Food and drink will be provided by area merchants such as Cakes by Sweetwater, The I-90 Cafe, Agape, St. John’s Lodge, E. 185th Arabica Coffeehouse, Grovewood Wine Bar and Tavern (now running the kitchen at the Beachland), and more.

There will be oodles of children’s activities, including face painting and coloring contests. On Sunday there will be a Parade the ‘Loo for the kids at 3:30 PM, that is open to anyone who wants to join in.

Waterloo Road will be closed off between E. 156th and E. 160th streets during festival hours. A public preview of the art exhibits and installations will be held Friday, August 19 from 6-9 PM.

This event was made possible with funding provided in part by the Cuyahoga County Board of Commissioners, Neighborhood Connections, Dominion East Ohio, Ulmer & Berne LLP, and zbk properties, llc. The event is supported by the Waterloo Road Merchants and Northeast Shores Development Corporation.

Two years into its exsistence, Arts Collinwood has evolved into an energetic, dynamic community centered arts and economic development organization, pursuing strategies to weave arts and the artists living and working in Collinwood into the fabric of the community, and to leverage artistic resources and events as drivers for community and economic development.

"We believe that the artists living in Collinwood can have a huge impact on our local economy, and inject new life into this neighborhood" says Executive Director Sarah Gyorki. "The festival is a great example of artists and local businesses working together to make it happen."

"The artists are already here," says Gyorki. "We are making the connection – drawing people here, and creating a new outlook for our community."
