=20
NYU4U II - Musical  Theatre Workshop=20
August 8 - 19
hosted by Rocky River Community Theatre
=20
Presented by Slightly Askew Company Members of NYU
=20
This two week workshop will be taught by current NYU students and alumni of=
=20
the CAP21 musical theatre program. Last summer, students were not only=20
exposed to a wide array of classes ranging from classical musical theatre=20
techniques, but also to the cutting edge collaborative theatre creation pro=
cesses put=20
into use by New York theatre practitioners today. The goal of this year's=20
workshop is to expose our Cleveland students to even more varied theatre=20
methodologies to enhance not only their individual performing abilities, bu=
t to=20
expand their working knowledge of the art of theatre, increase their=20
marketability as actors, awaken them to new and exciting experiences, and t=
o nurture the=20
creative artist in each of them.=20
=20
The workshop will be divided into two parts. The first week will be devoted=
=20
to intensive theatrical training by not only teachers that have been involv=
ed=20
in the Cleveland workshops before, but new teachers as well.
=20
Cool new classes to be offered this year in addition to the traditional far=
e:
=20
WEEK ONE
=20
Film and Television  Technique
Learn the specifics about the distinct art of film acting by participating=20
in on-camera exercises, scenes, and more. Material will be drawn from scrip=
ts=20
of currently running television shows and films in the works, and students=20
will not only learn more about the differences between stage acting and fil=
m=20
acting, but will also participate in mock on-camera film auditions. And wit=
h=20
the use of digital technology, our students will be able to learn by actual=
ly=20
watching the playback of themselves!
=20
Shakespeare  Intensive
In this class, students will not only work on analysis, monologues, and=20
scenework from the Bard's plays, but they will also be introduced to=20
interpretation of his work using devised theatre techniques. Just as theatr=
e companies in=20
New York analyze and deconstruct Shakespeare's plays to make them more=20
relevant to today's audiences and to take a political stance on the work, w=
e will=20
get our students involved in thinking about this text critically and=20
actively, rather than from the removed standpoint usually taken. We will al=
so have a=20
lot of fun creating our own interpretations of Shakespeare's work as seen=20
through our students' eyes!
=20
Acting  Methods
Rather than teach generalized scene study and acting classes, this year we=20
will be introducing our students to the different acting methods available=20=
to=20
them. From Stanislavsky to Meisner to Adler to Mamet, our students will=20
participate in exercises and gain a working knowledge of these methods to a=
pply to=20
their own scene work, monologues, and theatrical performances. By studying=20
these tride and true methods, our young actors will grow to further underst=
and=20
the ways in which different performers approach creating a moment onstage,=20
and will hopefully find a method that intrigues and interests them=20
individually as artists!
=20
Mask Work, Improvisation, and  Clown
This class will introduce students to the practice of mask work in=20
performance. Taught as an acting class in major universities, this class wi=
ll use both=20
Balinese mask technique and French theatre artisan Jacques LeCoq's methods=20
(which have been integral in creating the works of Cirque du Soleil) to bri=
ng=20
truth, simplicity, and ultimately fun to the actor's craft. From neutral=20
masks to characters and buffoons, this class will run the gamut of mask wor=
k and=20
improvisational possibilities in order to free the actor, artist, and clown=
=20
in each of our students.
=20
Puppetry
Students will be both introduced to the different types of puppetry used in=
=20
theatrical performances across the globe as well as gain puppetry skills us=
ed=20
for performance. From shadow puppetry to bunraku to rod work to found=20
objects, students will be able to have fun as well as unleash their unendin=
g=20
creativity by building puppets and participating in puppet performances of=20=
their=20
own.
=20
JUST TO NAME A FEW!
=20
WEEK TWO
=20
THE SECOND WEEK will be a very special week dedicated to introducing=20
students to an entirely different set of performance skills.=20
=20
Our students will be involved in the creation and workshopping of a brand=20
new musical theatre piece by Slightly Askew company members Randy Blair and=
=20
Will Van Dyke. During this week, students will be cast in the Cleveland wor=
kshop=20
of the piece, to be presented before an audience on the final day of=20
classes. This opportunity will be conducted as if the students were actuall=
y=20
participating in the workshop of a new Broadway musical, and specific skill=
s will be=20
called into play during this time that students would need to utilize in a=20
professional performing situation. Not only will our actors gain experience=
=20
preparing to perform in an original musical, but they will be exposed to th=
e=20
time constraints of this sort of venture; the constant refining and changin=
g of=20
material; the utilization of all the acting training they have received to=20
create character, situation, and conflict in a world of limited costumes,=20
lights, and scenery; and many other unique challenges of creating something=
 from=20
the bottom up. This will be a wonderful growth experience for our students,=
=20
and is especially important for those preparing to go into musical theatre=20=
or=20
acting as a profession.
=20
BUT THAT'S NOT  ALL!
=20
Students from the NYU4U workshop will also be invited, if they wish, to=20
participate in the New York workshop production of this musical. On Septemb=
er=20
18th (date to be confirmed), the show will be given a staged reading for=20
producers and agencies in a theatre in New York City. Members of the Clevel=
and=20
workshop will be given the excellent opportunity of sharing the stage with=20
Broadway performers, NYU students, and alumni, adding an important credit t=
o their=20
resume, as well as exposing them to another unique experience and set of=20
performance skills.
=20
Students will be responsible for all of their expenses in participation in=20
the NYU performance, such as air fare, hotel, any other personal =20
accommodations. But what an incredible opportunity for those who can atten=
d!!!!!!
=20
We believe in the talent of all of our students, and look forward to anothe=
r=20
challenging and fun summer in Cleveland. Hopefully you'll join us for two=20
awesome weeks -- we can't wait to see you!

the final day of classes. This opportunity will be conducted as if the stude=

were actually participating in the workshop of a new Broadway musical, and=20
specific skills will be called into play during this time that students woul=
d=20
need to utilize in a professional performing situation. Not only will our ac=

gain experience preparing to perform in an original musical, but they will b=

exposed to the time constraints of this sort of venture; the constant refini=

received to create character, situation, and conflict in a world of limited=20
costumes, lights, and scenery; and many other unique challenges of creating=20
something from the bottom up. This will be a wonderful growth experience for=
