Hudson Players Announce 2005/2006 Theater Season

The Hudson Players, Hudson’s theater tradition, have announced their 61st
theater season. The community theater’s 2005-06 productions will include two
musicals, a well known mystery and the popular community variety show all to
be held at the Barlow Community Center in Hudson.

“If someone is looking for a great season of theater, this is it,” said Gary
Maher, President of The Hudson Players. “The shows making it up are fun,
well known, and sure to be crowd pleasers. We’re even kicking off season
ticket sales early in anticipation of selling more then ever.”

The season will open with The Hudson Players 4th Annual Community Variety
Show September 23 & 24. The event promises an evening of great entertainment
in the true variety show tradition. In the past, acts have included singers,
dancers, comedians, bands, storytellers, vaudeville acts and more. Rapidly
becoming the Hudson Players most popular annual event, the variety show is a
great night out. Auditions are open to all and will be held August 29 & 30
at the Barlow Community Center.

The variety show will be followed by the amazingly fun, and very popular,
Forever Plaid, directed by Dave Stebbins and running October 28, 29 and
November 4, 5, 11, 12, 13, 18 & 19. One of the most popular and successful
musicals in recent memory, this deliciously goofy revue by Stuart Ross
centers on four young, eager male singers killed in a car crash in the 1950’
s on the way to their first big concert, and now miraculously revived for
the posthumous chance to fulfill their dreams and perform the show that
never was.

Singing in the closest of harmony, squabbling boyishly over the smallest
intonations and executing their charmingly outlandish choreography with
over-zealous precision, the “Plaids” are a guaranteed good time, with a
program of beloved songs and delightful patter that keeps audiences rolling
in the aisles when not humming along to some of the great nostalgic pop hits
of the '50s. Auditions are open to all and will be held September 11 & 12 at
the Barlow Community Center.

In February, the Players will present the fun, show-stopping musical Barnum,
running February 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 19, 24 & 25. See why "The Greatest
Show On Earth" is welcomed with open arms all over the world. With great
songs, and an upbeat, hard to believe true-life story, Barnum is a big,
colorful circus show in the spirit of the great showman himself. It
continues to be a crowd pleaser wherever it’s staged. Barnum tells the story
of P.T. Barnum and his wife Chairy, along with Joice Heth, Jenny Lind,
General Tom Thumb, James Bailey and all his band of performers and friends
he met along the way. There will only by one P.T. Barnum, but his enthusiasm
and spirit live forever in this show. With music by Cy Coleman, Lyrics by
Michael Stewart, and a book by Mark Bramble, the show was well represented
by Jim Dale and Glenn Close who starred in the show on Broadway in its
highly successful run. Come join the circus! There's a great part for
everyone. Auditions are open to all and will be held November 6 & 7 at the
Barlow Community Center.

Spring will bring the adventurous mystery Deathtrap, by Ira Levin, running
May 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 & 20. One of the biggest hits in the history of
Broadway, it’s most simply described as a thriller in two acts, one set and
five characters. The basic premise: How far will someone go to have a hit
play? This is a story where everyone has hidden motives. Within the play,
there is a play called Deathtrap that has been written by Clifford and, by
all accounts, it sure to be a big hit on Broadway - a sure thing. Almost
every character in this story is going to try to possess this play and pass
it off as their own work. There's absolutely nothing that any of them would
stop at to get it. Or is there? Auditions are open to all and will be held
March 5 & 6 at the Barlow Community Center.

As a true community theater, the Hudson Players are an all-volunteer
organization and welcome all who wish to volunteer to get involved. To help
over the summer with publicity, fundraising, membership and more simply send
and email to info at hudsonplayers.com or call 330-655-8522. In addition, if
anyone wishes to work on any the season’s shows or to learn more about the
group in general, they are encouraged to attend the groups kick-off general
membership meeting to be held at the Barlow Community Center, August 28,
2005. The evening will feature entertainment and refreshments along with a
chance to learn more about the groups operations.
