1. Message from the Artistic Director

Hello!

Oliver here. What you are reading is the first
Newfangled newsletter. Each month we hope to send you
updates on how Newfangled is developing and on
upcoming projects.

Additionally, we hope to use this newsletter to keep
connected with our community. Each newsletter will
have a special section called “Newfangled community”
which should let the rest of us know what Newfangled
“alumni” have been up to. A Newfangled alumnus is
anyone who has participated in one of our projects in
any capacity. Appearing in a play? Let us know. Get
that big promotion? Have a child? Excited about that
new divorce? Just drop us an email at this address and
we’ll include it in the next issue.

In line with that, I want to draw your attention to
our website:
http://www.geocities.com/newfangledwebsite

It’s the best place to find new information about our
activities. Additionally, if you are a Newfangled
alumnus, take a look at the section entitled
“Newfangled community.” There should be an entry for
you. Some of them are ridiculously out of date, or
have no information at all. Please take a few moments
to drop us a line to update your information.

Newfangled Productions strives not only to be a
production company that does good work, but also a
community of friends. We hope that this newsletter
will help keep this community connected.

Yours,
Oliver Corrigan
Artistic Director

2. LAST MONTH - The Fourth Annual Starving Artists’
Ball

The Starving Artists’ Ball was a great success and a
wonderful start to our new year. Thank you to everyone
who attended. If you couldn’t be there, hopefully
we’ll see you next year.

4. IMPORTANT - New email address

We have a new email address. This is it:

newfangled02 at yahoo.com

We will still be checking our old address
(newfangled at email.com) but we are trying to wean
ourselves off of it, so please update your address
book.

5. COMING UP - Ultimate Kickball Challenge!

Please join us on Sunday, 21 August for the Ultimate
Kickball Challenge! What better way for Newfangled to
kick off our new year than to play a game that has
kick right in the title? I know. I know. How do we
think of this stuff?

We’re still looking for players, so if you are
interested in showing off your mad kickball skeelz
than give us a call at (330)620-9686 and we’ll sign
you up.

Due to a special arrangement with the Akron Aeros
(http://www.akronaeros.com) we will be giving away 10
free tickets to any of their upcoming games.

6. Newfangled looking for new proposals

We are very excited about the projects we have lined
up for this year, but we are still looking for new
proposals. Interested in directing a play, playing a
concert, dancing, painting, poetry, anything? Please
contact Artistic Director Oliver Corrigan at
330-620-9686.

7. Newfangled looking for young playwrights

For the past two years Newfangled Productions has
produced workshop performances of the plays of young
people through our “Under Construction” program [Bums:
A Musical (2004) and Don’t Step on my Anthill & Old
George (2005)]. Are you or someone you know a
playwright under 21 years old? Please contact Artistic
Director Oliver Corrigan at 330-620-9686 and your play
could be the one chosen this year.

8. Newfangled community

* Congratulations to Community Director Jamie Russell
and Justin Hale who were married on July 3rd. If you
missed the wedding, I’m sure they’ll still accept
gifts!

* Good luck to Kristin Paschen who has left Akron for
a new home in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. We’ll miss you,
Kristin!

* Jackie Wren has been shipped off to Georgia to begin
her career with the U.S. Army. We’ll miss you too,
Jackie!

* Wendy Duke and Ingénue Theatre Ensemble in
conjunction with the City of Akron Lock 3 Summer Arts
Experience will present “Between the Blacktop and the
White Clouds”, a play that examines children’s inner
lives as they play on the playground, on Wednesday,
August 10th and Thursday, August 11th at Lock 3 Park
in downtown Akron. Both performances begin at 7 PM.
Lock 3 is located on Main St. between the Akron Civic
Theatre and the former O’Neil’s building.

The play will also be performed on Saturday, August
13th and Sunday, August 14th at the Main Library in
the Children’s Area at 2 PM both days.

Ingénue Theatre Ensemble is an educationally based
program in which students are encouraged to develop
their characters both onstage and off. Ingénue is
essentially an equal opportunity based program, and
seasons consist of two or three plays ranging from
Shakespearian drama to original work written by the
ensemble. The theatre company has been in existence
since 1998 under the direction of Suzie Graham. Since
then, the youth ensemble has stepped into directing as
well as writing. Children ages 3-17 are invited to
participate in productions regardless of experience
levels.

The Lock 3 Summer Arts Experience began 2 years ago
through the City of Akron, serving as an educational
artistic experience with the intent of giving students
insight into the professional art world. Apprentices
are taught by a master artist for the entire summer.
At the end of the summer, apprentices are then
compensated for their efforts at a graduation
ceremony. Lock 3 welcomes Wendy Duke, drama teacher at
Miller South School for the Visual and Performing
Arts, as their master artist in theatre production.
This year, “Between the Blacktop and the White Clouds”
is being presented by ten apprentices in theatre
production. They have cast the show, designed the
production and directed scenes. The cast of 30
children from ages 3-15 are members of the Ingénue
Theatre Ensemble.

All performances are free and open to the public.
