River Street scores with "Parallel"
by Herb Hammer
Chagrin Valley Times
8/18/05

Two spiritual beings stand calmly at a rostrum and plan the beginning of =
humans in the world. They first decided the colors: yellow, brown, =
white, etc. White is kinda boring but they leave it in anyhow. Women =
they believe will have all the advantages so they make childbirth =
painful to make up for it.

Leaping forward in time to present day, these same two women play all =
the parts, both men and women, in a dozen skits. The results are =
overall amazingly original and often very funny.

The show, known when it was first produced 19 years ago, was entitled =
"Parallel Lives": The Kathy and Mo Show", written and performed by =
Kathy Najimy and Mo Gaffney.

At the tiny River Street Playhouse next door to the Chagrin Valley =
Little Theatre, Yvonne E. Pilarczyk and Lisa Tarr assume the roles, and =
who could ask for a better duo.

The authors appear to have written the show for their own amusement. =
Some scenes are rip-roaringly funny and some are not. But with so many =
of these little vignettes you can't be funny all the time. =20

Some of the best include two Catholic women going to confession for the =
first time in over a decade. Besides all their other sins, the worst =
seems to be, they lied a lot. In the same vein, they are driving along =
deciding that their religion is useless. A sudden close call has them =
praying frantically.

And on they go deciding the urn with their aunt's cremated remains =
should have the window seat on the airplane. One of the actresses goes =
over the top worshipping Kenny Rogers. And then a man and a woman in =
bed wake each other in turn with accusations.

It's nice to see this quaint little theater all grown up. The language =
here is sometimes brutal but performed so naturally you wouldn't want it =
any other way.

The best is saved for last. We're at a neighborhood bar. Hank (Miss =
Pilarczyk), a regular and probably always a little drunk, continues to =
tell Karen Sue (Miss Tarr), a soon-to-be-alcoholic, how pretty she is. =
He wants to marry her though he's already married. The conversation is =
repeated over and over and becomes funnier and funnier. Miss Pilarczyk =
shows her great acting range as the lowly Hank. Miss Tarr plays off of =
her perfectly.

Director Barbara Rhoades keeps the action amazingly well-paced. This =
show could have been clumsy waiting for scenes to change, but not here. =
Miss Rhoades knows what's funny and has her changes make the most of =
every laugh.

All in all, "Parallel Lives" is much fun. These two performers should =
win an award for their remarkable versatility. The two hours fly by.

It would be nice to see "Parallel Lives" run for a month or two, rather =
than the merely three weeks on the schedule. You could bet the patrons =
would have to be turned away. This show would pack the house if given =
time.
