        THE WESTERN RESERVE PLAYHOUSE PRESENTS

                               ARSENIC AND OLD LACE

                                    By Joseph Kesselring

                  SEPT. 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24, 25*, 30, & OCT. 1

                               Directed by Robert Kmiecik

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE is a frenzied, hilarious, madcap black comedy written by JOSEPH KESSELRING in 1939. The first Broadway production was at the Fulton Theatre on January 10, 1941. On September 25, 1943 it transferred to the Hudson Theatre and closed there having played 1,444 performances. Considered a rousing success at the time, it has become best known through the 1944 film version which starred Cary Grant.

The play is a farce revolving around Mortimer Brewster (BRIAN HUTCHISON), a theatre hating drama critic who must deal with his crazy family and local police as he debates whether to go through with marrying Elaine the woman he loves (ANNE REEVES). His family includes two spinster aunts, Abby (KATHY TURK) and Martha (THELMA HUTTNER) who have taken to murdering lonely and miserable old men who have no families by compassionately serving up arsenic laden elderberry wine. One such victim who narrowly escapes is Mr. Gibbs (BOB RAUCH). Mort also has a brother who believes he’s Teddy Roosevelt (BARRY FRIEDMAN) and a criminally murderous brother Jonathan (MIKE ROGAN) who due to a botched plastic surgery in order to evade authorities now looks like horror film actor Boris Karloff (a referential joke as the part was originally played by Karloff). His face has been changed several times by a fellow criminal companion Dr. Einstein (JAY DIAL).

Toss in a policeman who thinks he’s a play write (MIKE MURPHY) and the Brooklyn cop brigade played by MARC DUSINI, RAJ SINHA and TOM FERRARO and you have one very funny slapstick comedy. The most sane member of the community is Rev. Dr. Harper played by WALT KAMINSKI and the last lonely man to meet his ill timed end is DAVE HINEBAUGH.

When the author Kesselring taught at Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas, he lived in a boarding house called Goerz House, and many features of its living room are reflected in The Brewster sisters’ living room where the action of the play is set. WRP has successfully duplicated that very set. The Goerz House is now the home of the college president.

Marie Dusini, Bob Kmiecik, and Renee De Santis work together as a team for the third time as Producer, Director and Stage Manager, previously having worked together on The Music Man and The Fantasticks. WRP’s Prop Master Bobbi Birch again takes on that duty for the third time this year. Marc Dusini the theatres lighting director has tapped Sharon Nieland and Bobbi Birch to take over those chores as he is on stage in this production. Also doing double duty as cast member and set designer is Walt Kaminski. Walt has designed and painted each and every WRP set for the past twelve years. Helping Walt with the painting and dressing of this set will be Anna Zender who also manages the theatres’ consession booth every night. Ms. Dusini says “I am particularly proud of the cast and crew that we have put together for this production. It will be a first class team resulting in a winning show for our last production of the 2005 summer season
