Marilyn Horne to be Distinguished Professor of Voice
at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music

OBERLIN, OHIO =97 The legendary mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, whose=20
five-decade career in opera, concert, and recital has been celebrated=20
throughout the world, will be in residence as Distinguished Professor=20
of Voice at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music from October 14 through=20
17, 2005.

	=93Marilyn Horne is an icon,=94 says Dean of the Conservatory =
David H.=20
Stull. =93Her stature as a singer, secured by an astonishing performance=20=

career, is preserved not only by her discography but also by the legacy=20=

she has created as a teacher and mentor. We look forward to welcoming=20
her to Oberlin.=94

	Regarded as one of the greatest operatic mezzo-sopranos in =
history for=20
the power and artistry of her unique and dazzling coloratura as well as=20=

for her revival of many forgotten Rossini, Handel, Vivaldi, and Bellini=20=

operas, Horne will present three master classes in Oberlin, two of=20
which will be open to the public. She will also teach private lessons=20
with Oberlin voice majors.

	=93What a joy it is to be returning to Oberlin as a teacher =

sung there many years ago and having the most pleasant memories of that=20=

visited Oberlin twice before=97in 1966 and in 1978=97performing under =

auspices of the Artist Recital Series (ARS). For her 1978 concert=20
appearance, during the 100th anniversary season of the ARS, the Oberlin=20=

Orchestra, conducted by Emeritus Professor of Orchestral Conducting=20
Robert Baustian, accompanied her.

	Horne created the Marilyn Horne Foundation in 1994 to support =
young=20
singers and the art of the song. She is vocal program director at the=20
Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California.

	The two public master classes, both of which will be held in =
Finney=20
Chapel, are scheduled for Friday, October 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. and=20
Sunday, October 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. General admission tickets are $5=20
for the public and free for those with an Oberlin College I.D. and can=20=

be purchased at Oberlin=92s Central Ticket Service Box Office, located =

the lobby of Hall Auditorium, 67 N. Main Street, or by calling=20
