The Art and Craft of Fiction: A Journey into Story

Novelist, playwright, magazine columnist, teacher and filmmaker Scott Lax
will take students on an eight-week journey through the world of fiction.
Scott will share how he turned one single sentence - which remains the last
sentence of his novel, The Year That Trembled - into a nationally
award-winning novel and feature film, and finally into a produced stage
play. Through writing exercises, short lectures and open discussion,
students will learn about creating believable characters, structuring plots,
rewriting, point of view and other elements critical to writing good
fiction. Finally, each student will have a selection of his or her writing
work-shopped in a supportive and constructive environment.

"My goal is for each student to come out on the other side of this workshop
with the tools to turn ideas and interests into publishable fiction, and
with the confidence to do their best work." says Scott. "I've designed this
workshop to enrich the creative lives of each of its participants."

The eight-week workshop will be from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Tuesday
evenings beginning September 13 and running through November 1. The cost is
$320, which includes the cost of photocopying student manuscripts. Weeks one
through four will be devoted to discussion, lectures and writing exercises.
Students will be required to bring a sample of a work-in-progress to the
first class. On week two Scott will pass out copies of all student work to
workshop participants, giving them three weeks to read everyone's work for
workshopping during weeks five through eight.

This class be held at our annex, Mayfield Village Civic Center right off of
I-271 and Wilson Mills Rd. 6622 Wilson Mills Rd. at the corner of Wilson
Mills and SOM Center Rd. (Ohio Rt. 91)
