The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) joins the rest of the country in its heartfelt concern for the people in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The Institute has students, faculty and staff with family in that region. Many of its alumni perform with professional organizations such as the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, whose activities have been curtailed for the foreseeable future. CIM feels a strong connection to these musicians and will provide assistance to them though a relief fund set up by the American Symphony Orchestra League.

The Gulf Coast Orchestra Relief Fund will help support those orchestras that were most affected by the storm – including the Louisiana Philharmonic, Gulf Coast Symphony (Biloxi), the Meridian Symphony and Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestras. CIM faculty, staff and trustees invite the community to join them in supporting this effort by sending contributions payable to the American Symphony Orchestra League, 33 West 60th Street, Fifth Floor, New York, NY 10023. Contributors are asked to write “Gulf Coast Orchestra Relief Fund” on the face of the check.

Friends of CIM Benefit now in Tribute to New Orleans: The Friends of CIM have been working for the last year on a benefit set for September 24. The theme of the party, A Night in New Orleans, embraced the elegance of the Delta South, its food, music and ambience. In light of this tragedy, the benefit will now be a tribute to the fortitude of the people of that region. While the benefit’s primary goal is to raise funds in support the Young Artist Program at CIM, a portion of the proceeds from the event’s silent auction will now be used to aid the musicians who have lost their homes and livelihood because of the devastation.

Tickets to the FCIM Benefit are still available at $100, $200 and $500. Jean Koznarek, president of the Friends of CIM, welcomes guests to enjoy an evening of dinner, dancing and a musical program that will feature CIM students in a concert organized by pianist Marshall Griffith. The proceeds will now benefit not only CIM, but the musicians from that region who are in immediate need through the Gulf Coast Orchestra Relief Fund.

Annual CIM Library Sale to Benefit the Relief Effort: Each fall, the CIM library hosts a sale of old sheet music, recordings and other items. Musical treasures and bargains are eagerly purchased by students and local musicians at this much-awaited sale. This year’s sale will be held at CIM’s main building in University Circle on Friday, November 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 12 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. In the past, proceeds have gone to the library acquisition fund, but this year proceeds will be sent to the Gulf Coast Orchestra Relief Fund to help the hundreds of musicians caught in Hurricane Katrina get back on their feet. The sale is open to the public.

Please call (216) 791-5000 or visit cim.edu for more information.
