September 12, 2005 : A FEW WORDS OF INTRODUCTION FROM GRETA ROTHMAN

In the spring of 1994, I was fortunate enough to be an audience member =
at a workshop for aspiring musical theatre writers. A young woman =
stepped forward and proceeded to perform a piece she had just written, =
entitled Those Seven Little Words: I Love You, So You're Probably Gay. =
Needless to say, the minute the song began to unfold it was as if this =
girl had interviewed me and then written the song about my life. I vowed =
that at some point I would have to get a hold of that song and perform =
it myself.

'Fast forward' to 1999. While living in New York City, I sought an =
outlet for my desire to perform. When I looked around, it seemed that =
everyone from my out-of-work actor friends, to chorus girls, to big =
Broadway stars had discovered the world of "cabaret." As a cabaret =
performer, one could write and direct their own piece, retaining full =
authority over the production and the content.

I knew that if I was going to do a cabaret show it would have to be =
about something that resonated with me and would also touch others. Then =
I remembered the song and went into action. After receiving the =
performance rights from the composer, my show began to take shape.

Many reincarnations later, a funny thing has happened. What started out =
as me just wanting to perform and entertain people has turned into a =
much broader experience, touching people in ways I never dreamed it =
would. Women have come up to me after a show and said, "That's my life =
story! It's good to know I'm not the only one who falls for gay men all =
the time!" Gay men have come up to me and said that they now understand =
their straight female friends a little better. A few students have even =
told me that the show gave them the confidence to try and start a =
gay/straight alliance at their school! Perhaps the most beautiful thing =
of all is that when I performed the show at Western Reserve Academy, it =
triggered dialogue about a subject that people there had been afraid to =
address: being gay and how to relate to people who are gay.

It thrills me that my little story is able to turn a formerly 'taboo' =
subject matter into a topic of conversation. I think it's because the =
cast and I approach the material in a way that is funny, safe and, most =
of all, honest.
