OF MICE AND MEN by John Steinbeck

Two traveling farm workers, George and his friend
Lennie, with delusions of living off the "fat of the
land," have just arrived at a ranch to work for enough
money to buy their own place.  George, a responsible,
intelligent man, befriends Lennie, and looks out for
him as if he were a brother.  Lennie is a man-child, a
little boy in the body of a dangerously powerful man. 
It's Lennie's obsession with soft and cuddly things
that has made George cautious about who the gentle
giant, with his brute strength, associates with, as it
has gotten them into trouble in the past.  George's
loyal friendship and his promise to allow Lennie to
"tend to the rabbits" on their future land keep Lennie
calm amidst dangerous distractions; however, the
belligerent boss's son, Curley, and Curley's
flirtatious wife, threaten to undo the pair's vivid
dreams.  An intimate portrait of two men facing a
world marked by petty tyranny, misunderstanding,
jealousy, and callousness, Of Mice and Men explores
questions of strength, weakness, usefulness, reality
and utopia in Depression-Era California.
