Notification of Auditions for Alternative Theatre & New Performance Practice=
=20
at The Central School of Speech and Drama, part of the University of London,=
=20
and the UK=E2=80=99s appointed Centre of Excellence for Theatre Training

We are now accepting applications for auditions to join Alternative Theatre=20=
&=20
New Performance Practice in the academic year 2006/2007.

Interviews will take place in the spring of 2006 in New York, but only a=20
limited set of dates and places are available.

Please visit the school=E2=80=99s website for further information=20
http://www.cssd.ac.uk <http://www.cssd.ac.uk/>=20

It is a uniquely exciting moment at this time in the history of The Central=20
School of Speech and Drama, and 2006 will be the school=E2=80=99s Centenary=20=
Year. =20

In the last twelve months the School has celebrated an unprecedented number=20
of successes and I would like to take the opportunity to share these with yo=
u,=20
very briefly.

Firstly, following an application to the Quality Assurance Agency for Englan=
d=20
(which oversees the quality of all higher education provision), The Central=20
School of Speech and Drama won the right to award our own degrees =E2=80=93=20=
becoming=20
the only UK drama school to receive this national recognition of the equival=
ence=20
of our standards to those in top universities.=20

Then, early in 2005, this recognition of excellence was consolidated further=
=20
when the School was formally designated the UK=E2=80=99s Centre for Excellen=
ce in=20
Training for Theatre by HEFCE (the Higher Education Funding Council for Engl=
and)=20
an honor that brings with it an additional =C2=A34,000,000 of government fun=
ding.  =20
This has allowed for a major investment in, for example, technical equipment=
=20
and artistic residencies.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly of all, 2004/5 saw the School achieve=20
its long-held ambition to be admitted as a College to the federal University=
 of=20
London. We are the first specialist drama school to achieve this goal. As=20
you will probably know, Colleges of London University all retain their=20
essential independence and individuality, they are entirely self-governing.=20=
=20

Alternative Theatre & New Performance Practice is an Undergraduate BA (HONS)=
=20
Degree pathway, led by Karl Rouse (k.rouse at cssd.ac.uk) with a strong emphasi=
s=20
on practice, performance, and industry partnerships.

Recently new work was created in collaboration with the English National=20
Opera, and the London Development Agency, as well as the Institute for=20
Contemporary Art, and The National Theatre.

Visiting companies such as Improbable (Shockheaded Peter) and Blind Summit=20
(ENO's Madam Butterfly), as well as site-specific companies such as=20
DreamThinkSpeak (The Barbican's Underground) and Shunt (The National Theatre=
's Tropicana),=20
ensure ATNPP students are defining the role of theatre for the next=20
generation of London=E2=80=99s artistic scene, and are also in touch with th=
e industry as it=20
stands today.

Working on ATNPP you will be placed alongside students from the BA (HONS) in=
=20
Theatre Practice, which includes puppetry, stage management, scenic design a=
nd=20
construction, lighting and sound among other industries, to ensure=20
collaboration is at the heart of your learning and practice.

ATNPP students consider directing, performance, producing, writing, and=20
dramaturgical skills in a range of contexts and projects and is therefore su=
itable=20
for a number of career paths and further study opportunities.

If you would like to be considered for the New York auditions for this=20
exciting program please contact Karl Rouse directly on k.rouse at cssd.ac.uk an=
d visit=20
the school=E2=80=99s website at http://www.cssd.ac.uk <http://www.cssd.ac.uk=
/>  we=20
will also be happy to put you in contact with our current students if you wo=
uld=20
like to know more from their perspective!
