Celeste Cosentino, Joe Bishara, Cynthia Deli and Rey Robles
Cuban-American playwright Nilo Cruz received the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for this
arresting and seductive tale. In the oppressive heat of a 1920s South Florida
cigar factory, the cold world of Anna Karenina settles over the landscape
like thick tobacco smoke. Pride and passions are already running high as the
factory is threatened by the race to industrialize and join the American Dream. A
dashing Cuban lector is hired to read Tolstoy's passionate love story to the
cutters, bunchers and rollers. But his presence ignites potent and painful
fires inside a young dreamer, a forgotten wife and a rejected husband who yearn
for their own kind of love.
