Well, I tried like the devil to stay out of this debate, but my comment =
on what Bill Johns had to say, is a brief re-play from the PAY vs NO PAY =
Discussion: The Unions are not there to get you work. You and agents =
do that. Unions are there to protect that work. =20

"The greater good for the greatest number." Altruistic values indeed, =
but there they are.

>From the page on SAG History at www.sag.org "Both idealism and outrage =
motivated the Founding Fathers and Mothers who created the Screen Actors =
Guild. Idealism, in that they believed they could succeed in doing, as =
Guild President Ralph Morgan once said, "the greatest good for the =
greatest number" by building a respected organization to protect actors. =
"

This motto is as relevant now as it was then. The problem is most =
people today only have enough attention span to provide the "greater =
good" belief for victims of a Hurricane. The past 40 years have brought =
us the fast food generation that didn't have to struggle to get here and =
now they want it all on a silver platter.............from the =
drive-through. =20

That's my view on FC and any other attempt to weaken the fibers of any =
union created to protect actors.

Respectfully-

Your Devoted Advocate and Founder of the GOT PAY? Organization-

  Subject: [NEohioPAL]Re: Mike Kraft's response to Fi-Core

"We don't join the union for what we can get, we join the union for =
what we can give"??!?

Wow, Mike, I don't think John Kennedy could have said it better... oh =
wait he did.

"Ashk knot wot your union can do for you; ashk wot YOU can do for your =
union." (paraphrased and accented extremely)

It's rare to hear anyone speak in such altruistic tones about their =
union and I'm not doubting that you believe everything you say, however =
SAG only seems to exhert power over it's members and not the bulk of the =
industry. You talk about power in numbers, well why doesn't SAG use it's =
power to make sure that if a production can afford to go SAG that it =
does. However, if it can't afford to pay, who really suffers but the =
actors who would like to be in some good projects that are underfunded?=20

I completely agree that we need the union to insure that producers =
with money don't take advantage of talented actors who need 'a break' =
and start paying less. It would slowly erode the entire pay scale for =
actors, so there needs to be an organization that sets the standards and =
polices the industry.=20

However, where the union seems powerless is in providing any =
substantial work for it's members. A few years ago I read that the =
average SAG actor earns $5,000 per year*. If that's the average and only =
about 50 'stars' make millions, you can imagine how many dues-paying SAG =
actors make almost nothing each year. The article said they have to have =
regular jobs to support themselves. Well why can't one of those jobs be =
doing the work you love to do... acting!=20

I'll tell you why; because the union only has power over its members. =
They figure if they can scare their membership with threats of expulsion =
then they won't take non-union jobs; and thereby producers will have to =
pay more for the best talent and all will be right with the world. In a =
way, it works, the only problem is it's a lazy approach. Instead of =
seeking out productions who are spending tons of money on everything but =
the talent and setting up pickets and exherting pressure on companies to =
not employ these production houses (like other unions do), SAG just =
penalizes its members and makes it impossible for them to do the work =
they love. It's okay to dig ditches and haul rocks, to supplement your =
miniscule SAG income, but don't act in anything non-union... oh the =
horror!

Well I don't think the union will fall because of financial core, and =
if some want to opt for it, so what? It's just a shame that there's no =
provision based on location that would allow local actors to take some =
non-union gigs. I've worked for many area production houses and between =
Mike and Joe Cali and Jim Kisicki, and Jim Bloom and Helene Weinburg, =
there aren't any jobs left...lol. I only say that because no matter =
where I was, those are the actors who seemed to get all the gigs.=20

Producing and directing a feature film is for me the culmination of a =
lifelong dream and not a business stuffed with cash. I'm not making =
commercials for Proctor & Gamble, or working for FOX or NBC. I'm just a =
little guy with a big dream. Luckily I found some amazingly talented =
actors outside the SAG quagmire who are also dreaming. Well, I'm going =
to try my best to make their dreams come true as they have worked so =
hard for mine.=20

After all this I realize there's not an easy answer, but answers start =
by asking questions and perhaps the first should be, "Am I only supposed =
to give to my union, or am I allowed to expect something in return?"

  - Bill Johns
  www.cinevidproductions.com=20

  REFERENCE
*Some well-known actors-stars-earn well above the minimum; their =
salaries are many times the figures cited, creating the false impression =
that all actors are highly paid. For example, of the nearly 100,000 SAG =
members, only about 50 might be considered stars. The average income =
that SAG members earn from acting-less than $5,000 a year-is low because =
employment is erratic. Therefore, most actors must supplement their =
incomes by holding jobs in other occupations - source =
