Dare to sink into raw `Cabaret'

In-your-face adults-only show triumphs as disturbing story of =20
conscience, will be region's most meaningful '05 musical
Kalliope Stage has created an up-close and very personal production =20
of the musical Cabaret that is so in-your-face, it's downright =20
disturbing.

The fact that audiences become uncomfortable in the increasingly ugly =20=

world of the musical means that director Paul Gurgol and his cast =20
have done their jobs exceedingly well. The tiny theater has been =20
transformed into the 1930 Kit Kat Club in Berlin, with guests sitting =20=

at small, round tables. Actors and audience members mix as performers =20=

walk about the small house and sit amid viewers.

This adults-only production of the edgy 1997 Sam Mendes version is a =20
clear triumph.

The cautionary tale is so raw and intimate at Kalliope Stage, it's =20
hard not to take it personally. All the sleazy characters are =20
downright glaring and larger than life at the pocket-sized venue.

I was able to soak in every word and every lyric of the show, leading =20=

to my greatest understanding yet of how desperate and dangerous the =20
times were on the eve of the Nazi rise to power.

At first, audience members may feel disoriented when they see the =20
trombonist wearing nothing but a leather G-string. But you get used =20
to that, and much, much more. All the sexually explicit song and =20
dance isn't just for shock value: It makes perfect sense within the =20
context of the story, and its presentation has been thoroughly =20
thought out by director Gurgol.

He has done copious research on the period, which was one of economic =20=

depression and moral decay. Interesting poster boards of authentic =20
images from 1930s Berlin, juxtaposed with photos of Kalliope's =20
production, adorn the lobby walls.

In this story, American writer Cliff Bradshaw (Rick Hamilton) comes =20
to Berlin in search of something to write about. He finds much more =20
than he bargained for after meeting the self-destructive Sally Bowles =20=

(the stellar Jodi Brinkman), featured entertainer at the decadent Kit =20=

Kat Club.

Every detail Gurgol has added to this show is replete with symbolism: =20=

For instance, he has made Kit Kat boy Hans (Joseph Haladey III) a =20
clown who ultimately can't clown around anymore. And the Emcee starts =20=

out as a satyr -- half-man, half-goat -- who is a symbol of lust and =20
merrymaking.

John Paul Boukis is perfectly insane as the Emcee, the linchpin who =20
holds this whole seedy show together. Boukis, co-founder of Kalliope =20
Stage with Gurgol, is born for this role: He's a fearless actor and a =20=

powerful singer.

The multitalented Boukis also plays the violin at times, the =20
director's symbol of romance that contrasts with the score's heavy =20
accordion sounds, representing German nationalism.

The cast comprises a combination of New York and Northeast Ohio =20
actors. Among them is amazing singer Jay Strauss as the Jewish =20
widower, Herr Schultz, and the emotionally evocative Kathleen Huber =20
as Fraulein Schneider.

Gurgol's ultra-daring conception of Cabaret has been 20 years in the =20
making, ever since he staged I Am a Camera in New York, the book upon =20=

which the musical is based.

We as audience members can't remove ourselves from the seediness, but =20=

character Cliff does, in a sense. He's the foreign observer, mentally =20=

documenting the downfall of a culture. Cliff has a conscience, unlike =20=

Sally, who tries to avoid thinking about one. Sadly, Cliff tries to =20
be Sally's savior, but she won't have any saving. She just wants to =20
keep partying until the bitter end.

The show's timeless warning has to do with keeping your eyes open and =20=

taking a stand against the evils around you.

Audience members should arrive early at this Kit Kat Club to get a =20
feel for the hard-core party mood. They'll see cross-dresser Bobby =20
(Chris Sgarlata) having the time of his life on a swing above the stage.

Costumes have a heavy bondage look, and grungy makeup includes faux =20
bruises on a number of the actors' bodies. The provocative show =20
includes partial nudity, depiction of drug use and simulated sex.

This undoubtedly will be the most meaningful musical production =20
audiences will see all year in Northeast Ohio.

Embrace the discomfort. You'll be glad you did.

CHAGRIN VALLEY TIMES

Kalliope=92s =91Cabaret=92 is at its best

by Herb Hammer

The Weimar Republic is failing while the Nazis stand ready to take =20
over. We are in the decadent nightclub area of Berlin. It=92s New =20
Year=92s Eve 1930. The performers at the Kit Kat Club are as =20
entertaining as they are frightening yet fascinating. The 1966 Kander =20=

and Ebb musical =93Cabaret=94 begins.

The Kalliope Stage has turned their storefront theater at the corner =20
of Cedar and Lee roads into a nightclub. The audience is part of the =20
show. This is the style the New York revival of =93Cabaret=94 has done =20=

recently at Studio 54 on Broadway. The similarity ends there.

Director Paul Gurgol, who has apparently studied 1930 Berlin, is far =20
more daring in his production of =93Cabaret=94 than any other date.

The master of ceremonies, usually an impish, clown-faced little =20
fellow, here is a tall, devilish character, horns and all. No tuxedo =20
for him. He appears in a variety of garish costumes designed by the =20
creative Russ Borski.

This is a production to remember, far more daring than others you =20
might have seen with its glimpses of nudity and mix of gay and =20
straight characters appearing and disappearing.

This is not a fun musical. The end of the world is at hand, yet =20
gaiety persists. Mr. Gurgol=92s impressive work becomes more and more =20=

riveting as the action moves on.

Joe Masteroff=92s original book is kept intact. A young American would-=20=

be novelist, Cliff Bradshaw, arrives in Berlin, rents a room and =20
offers English lessons to earn his keep. He stops in at the Kit Kat =20
Club, meets up with the club=92s star performer, Sally Bowles. She =20
loses her job and immediately moves in with Cliff.

Far more interesting is the secondary plot. The aging landlady and =20
the Jewish fruit peddler plan to be married. They find, however, that =20=

the Nazis, though not yet in power, overturn the marriage. This =20
touching moment is the show=92s best. Though Cliff advises Herr Schultz =20=

to leave Germany, the fruit peddler tells him that this will pass. Of =20=

course, we know it won=92t pass. The wild and crazy life of Berlin is =20=

ending. The worst is yet to come. There is no happy ending for =20
anybody, not the bisexual Cliff nor the booze and drug addict Sally.

The Kander and Ebb songs have a Kurt Weil edge, and, though recent =20
productions have installed the song =93Maybe This Time=94 from the 1972 =20=

Liza Minnelli movie version, the music and lyrics are amusing and =20
sometimes frightening.

Jodi Brinkman is a sensation as Sally Bowles hiding behind her fears =20
with a happy, free-wheeling lifestyle. John Paul Boukis is =20
consistently evil yet funny and entertaining as the ever-present =20
master of ceremonies.

Jay Strauss and Kathleen Huber are wonderful as the couple whose ill-=20
fated wedding engagement brings tears.

And the chorus, well, they light up the stage performing Mr. Gurgol=92s =20=

impressive choreography . . . .

Witnessing a major production of this scale in this small space is =20
enough to take your breath away. =93Cabaret=94 was never this good =
before.

The show will probably sell out. Call (216) 321-0870 for =20
reservations. The show closes Oct. 16.
