The Turn of the  Screw=20
Opens Actors=E2=80=99  Summit=E2=80=99s 05-06 Season=20
Actors=E2=80=99 Summit Theater announces the opening of Jeffrey Hatcher=
=E2=80=99s=20
adaptation of the classic ghost story The Turn of the Screw. The play will h=
ave a=20
preview performance on Thursday, October 6, and will play through October 2=
3 at=20
Actors=E2=80=99 Summit Theater in downtown Hudson. =20
The Play=20
Henry James, the American expatriate writer, insisted that he had heard the=
=20
original story on which he based his supernatural tale from the Archbishop=20=
of=20
Canterbury. The novella was serialized in a British magazine. It became one=
=20
of the most critically acclaimed of James=E2=80=99 works. =20
The story is of a young governess who is hired to care for two recently =20
orphaned children. She journeys to a lonely English manor house called Bly.=20=
She =20
learns that she is the replacement for another young woman, like herself, wh=
o  c
ommitted suicide. The boy she is to care for has recently been sent home fro=
m=20
 boarding school for some =E2=80=9Cunspeakable=E2=80=9D offense. The new gov=
erness has begun=20
to see the ghosts of the first governess and her lover. More disturbing,=20
still is that the specters seem to have a particular interest in the childr=
en.=20
She must find a way to stop the fiends before it is too late. But perhaps t=
he=20
most frightening question that tortures the would-be heroine is: Are the=20
ghosts real, or are they the product of her own fevered imagination?=20
The stage adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher is wonderfully theatrical. He =20
brilliantly conveys the ambiguity of the original while relying on two actor=
s to =20
tell the entire story, without props or costume changes.=20
The Cast=20
Returning to the Actors=E2=80=99 Summit stage once again, is Sally Groth in=
 the role=20
of the governess. Sally was last seen at Actors=E2=80=99 Summit this pas=
t season=20
playing Susanna Shakespeare in The Herbal Bed. She has also performed at=20
Ensemble Theatre and Porthouse Theatre in the Cleveland area. Regionally, sh=
e  has=20
been seen at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C., The Denver Center,=
 =20
The Wayside Theatre in Virginia, The Trustus Theater in South Carolina, a =20
national tour of The Little Prince and in various theaters in New York City,=
 =20
where she was a founding member of the band, the Garage Ensemble. Sally is a=
 =20
graduate of Hiram College and the University of South Carolina.=20
Joining Sally on stage is another Actors=E2=80=99 Summit regular, Alex Cik=
ra. Alex=20
portrays multiple roles in The Turn of the Screw. Alex last appeared at Act=
ors
=E2=80=99 Summit with Sally in The Herbal Bed. Other Actors=E2=80=99 Summit=
 credits=20
include: The Memory of Water, Oedipus Rex and Otherwise Engaged. He began ac=
ting in =20
community theater =E2=80=93 specifically at Weathervane Community Playhouse=20=
and the =20
Players=E2=80=99 Guild of Canton. He also studied professionally at the Trin=
ity Rep =20
Conservatory in Providence Rhode Island. He has appeared in many local =20
productions, in plays contemporary and classical.=20
