First produced in 1662 with Moli=E8re himself as Arnolphe=2C and his =

former lover Catherine de Brie as his young ward=2C Agnes School for =

Wives became an instant hit and made Moli=E8re a household name in =

Paris=2E School for Wives follows the story of Arnolphe (Andrew =

Cruse)=2C a wealthy man who has recently taken the name of M=2E de la =

Souche=2E Arnolphe has returned home after an absence of ten days with =

the intention of marrying his young ward=2C Agnes (Danielle E=2E Payne)=2C=
 =

who he has raised since the age of five (Moli=E8re raised his wife =

Armande Bejart as his ward since she was five)=2E In keeping with his =

scheme to marry her=2C he has raised her in ignorance and bliss=2C hoping=
 =

that she will make the perfect wife=2C and that she will be=2C in effect=2C=

too stupid to cheat on him=2E Arnolphe has such an irrational fear of =

becoming a cuckold=2C like so many of the men he knows=2C that he will do=
 =

seemingly anything to prevent her from slipping through his hands=2E =

Later plays such as Tartuffe and The Misanthrope secured Moli=E8re his =

place among the greats=2C but there is little doubt that School for =

Wives is Moli=E8re at his wittiest=2E
