THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK

actors Sunday, October 9, and Monday, October 10 at 7:00PM.   No  appointmen=

necessary.  Actors will be asked to read from the  script.

This will be the area=E2=80=99s first major production of Wendy Kesselman=
=E2=80=99s 1997 =20
adaptation of the 1955 stage play by Francis Goodrich and Albert Hackett.  =20
Using new diary material published after Otto Frank=E2=80=99s death, and bei=
ng sensitive =20
to criticism of the 1955 script, this version is more compact, has more=20
tension  and edge, and depicts Anne as a complex, confused teenager, less sa=
intly.=20
The  cultural Jewish heritage of the families in hiding also is portrayed mo=
re =20
accurately.=20
=20
Production dates: February 3-26 on Beck Center=E2=80=99s Main  Stage. There=20=
will be a=20
few introductory rehearsals in mid-December;  regular rehearsals begin=20
January 2.
=20
Please Note:   This will be an important community event  with exhibits,=20
talks and educational projects. A number of very important  student matinees=
=20
(between 2-6) will be scheduled during February. Actors must be  able to adj=
ust=20
their schedules to accommodate those performances! If your =E2=80=9Cday  job=
=E2=80=9D does not=20
allow for personal days, please do not audition.=20
=20
Please be patient, casting may take some time, but everyone will be =20
notified. Casting should be complete by the end of October. All performers o=
ver  the=20
age of 18 will receive a stipend.
=20
The Cast
(Note: Ages given reflect the age of the actual characters in  1942. The pla=
y=20
spans 2 years. The actors should give the appearance of these  ages on the=20
large stage.)
=20
Anne Frank: age 13, bright, precocious, mischievous and articulate. Devoted=20=
=20
to her father.
Otto Frank: age 53, a refined, fair, dignified, loving family  man, Owner of=
=20
a food business in  the warehouse beneath the attic; served  in the German=20
Army in WW I.
Edith Frank: age 42, from a wealthy German  family, proper, frail, often=20
withholds humor and  warmth, nervous. =20
Margot Frank: age 17, pretty, smart, quiet, and serious.
Miep Gies: age  33, a Gentile employee of Mr. Frank=E2=80=99s who helps hide=
 and=20
protect the families.  Vivacious and warm.
Peter Van Daan: 16, part gawky school-boy, gentle,  somewhat bitter about=20
conditions.
Mr. Kraler: age 42, another Gentile  employee and protector. Energetic,=20
cautious.
Mrs. Van Daan: age 42, pampered  and spoiled, noisy and outspoken,=20
self-centered.
Mr. Van Daan: age 44, also a  businessman, weaker, scared, and larger than=20
Mr. Frank.
Mr. Dussel: age 43, a  dentist, slightly nervous, and a man of habit. Not th=
e=20
fool portrayed in the  original play and film, religious.
Three Men: one Nazi Officer and 2  members of the Police, appear at the end=20
of the play  wielding guns, shout  German commands, ransack the attic, and=20
arrest those in hiding.
