David Madigan and REASONABILISM Present

The owls are not what they seem.

A residue of mixed-media sculpture, paintings, and assorted detritus, by young and restless artists in the Cleveland area.

October 15 – November 12, 2005

 Th Fr 6-10pm, Sa-Su 1-5pm

Opening Reception Friday October 14, 6-10 pm

Arts Collinwood Gallery ·

15605 Waterloo Rd, Cleveland

216-692-9500

The burgeoning artists in this show, Leanne Strickler, Anna Robertson, Kyllea Kerg, Christopher Lees, Max Winters, Niki Smith, Amanda Cates, Brian Stoeckel, Stephen Rea, Kwame White, Corrina Coggins, and Priyadarshini C. Mahalingashetty work from their hearts, brains, eyes, ears, noses, mouths, and various other places. Niki says,” Much of my work deals with the scientific truths and origins, facts overlaid with emotion and the development of the mind and self… Throughout my works I explore my own sexuality and its effect on those around me. I am interested in identifying the origin of ‘self,’ the code we're given at birth contrasting with social development, the experiences I've had, and the things that influence me most.”

The artists work from what they sense and process. The pieces are wet and dry. After all, wood is metal is a tenet of REASONABILISM. The artists are all under 30. The pieces are all understood, and not understood. They are young, which is their old. They are the guiding owls. What do they seem? Their play is their work. They rest in pieces. They control us and we control them and there is none in the end. There is existence?

Christopher: “in my parents’ bedroom investigates ideas of origin in relation to memory. It is a collection of altered photos transferred onto raw canvas that describes the variety of memory within a particular environment.”

The work is in pieces, but the show must go on… it’s showtime, folks. Mixed media is one thing. The walls are on the floor. Priyadarshini C. Mahalingashetty said, “Goa, my paddy farm, my kitchen, my studio, the daily newspaper, and my children.” We know her, though we’ve never met her.

Leanne “deals with the constant ebb and flow of perception; how it is created, how it morphs, and how one view is often destroyed and replaced with another. Reality radically shifts from person to person, from day to day, and from moment to moment.”

As for the gallery, it is now a vessel, for those pearls which we are fortunate to sense. They work in a tower, which is sturdy and tall. We learn through their output, because output is input, processed. We are each other, separated, so the plan is to deliver, maybe, a connection, which is the only truth, which is subjective. It is a narrative.

The artists are raw, as is the work. Fresh, urgent. To view it is - you constructing, and the act is refreshing, ambiguous and obvious - sometimes burning. It is to be questioned and unquestioned. These artists witness and create and display and negotiate and discuss and propel. The eye is in the beauty of their minds. The truth is what they see. Now we witness the residue. Trust them…maybe, if you are so inclined.

"Never let anyone owe you an apology and don't leave a place thinking

you should have said something." -Akshita Sivakumar
