STEVE HACKETT
ACOUSTIC TRIO

Saturday, October 15
8:00 PM

Steve Hackett returns to the US concert circuit in Fall 2005. This time however the strobe lights and bass pedals get left behind as his acoustic trio takes to the stage for an 'unplugged' show of beautifully crafted pieces for acoustic guitar, flute and keyboards. Hackett will be accompanied by his brother, John, on flute and keyboardist Roger King.

One of music's most uncompromising and complex individuals, Steve Hackett has earned the reputation of being one of Britain's finest composers and guitarists. Originally a key member of the 'classic' Genesis his complex and distinctive playing contributed heavily to their early success, developing an elegance and sophistication which have since become his trademark. He has since achieved consistent solo success internationally in both the rock and classical arenas. Hackett says "I'm really looking forward to bringing the acoustic trio to the USA for the first time. We'll be playing selections from all solo periods and the French Impressionists but nothing too purist and the occasional hint of jazz. Even a couple of Genesis tunes too!"

John Hackett studied music at Sheffield University and, subsequently, flute with Edward Beckett and David Butt. He has toured and recorded extensively with his brother, Steve. In addition to appearances as a soloist, he has also performed with the with the English Flute Quartet. His solo performances have included concertos by Mozart, Vivaldi and Arnold. In recent years he has worked with the ambient group Symbiosis.

Roger King has collaborated with Steve on several albums. He is a classically trained musician, writer, programmer and engineer whose career has covered many aspects of the music industry. After graduating from Surrey University with a degree in Music & Sound Engineering he spent six formative years as an inhouse recording engineer and music producer for Island Music and Island Records and has also worked on high profile movies such as "Cliffhanger" and "In The Name Of The Father".

JOE JENCKS

Sunday, October 16
7:00 PM

Joe’s life-long interest in folk music led him to undergraduate and graduate studies in Vocal Music Performance, Choral Conducting, and Music Education. In addition to performing opera, jazz and classical music, Joe has also acted in musical and dramatic theater. While living in Seattle during the 1990’s, Joe became entwined in the Traditional Irish music community. This musical infusion was the thread that sewed together the quilt of Joe’s diverse performance background. It also signified a return to his earliest musical roots.

Joe’s style is both fierce and tender. “He has a remarkable tenor voice that’s capable of great strength and sweetness in the same moment, much as was Phil Ochs’ voice. His guitar is always a dead-on accompaniment to his songs’ intentions.” –Bill Fischer, Victory Music Review. Joe has an inspiring ability to connect genuinely and intimately with audiences of diverse ages and backgrounds.

Joe Jencks is a national touring performer and songwriter whose emerging career is based as much in ministering to the human spirit, as it is in the performance of music. “A Joe Jencks concert is definitely not a visit to the inner world of some guy with a guitar who would like us all to sit still and listen politely. It's an occasion for singing, a contagious rising up of voices, an act of joy and defiance. But don’t expect an evening that goes no further or asks no more probing questions than a string of protest songs. As deep as Joe Jencks’ union and social convictions go, his animating purpose runs deeper, tapping into the latent, nearly mystical beauty that a roomful of people can unleash by singing together.” –Brad Warren, Seattle Folklore Society

Tickets at the Door: $10.00

PETE HUTTLINGER, BRIAN HENKE, and MICHAEL KELSEY

Friday, October 21
8:00 PM

By the age of 12, PETE HUTTLINGER had begun music lessons and by 14 he had settled on the guitar. Soon after he graduated from high school, a relative left him a small inheritance. He decided to use this windfall to study at Berklee College of Music, the Boston-based academic home of such musical luminaries as Quincy Jones, Kevin Eubanks, Melissa Ethridge, Brandford Marsalis, Bruce Cockburn and Paula Cole. It was there that Huttlinger found he had a knack for music theory and harmony.

Huttlinger has performed on numerous Grammy-winning and Grammy-nominated projects. He has also been nominated for an Emmy for music he both composed and performed for a PBS special. His performances have been used in several national TV series, including the PBS Nature special "Let This Be A Voice." He created the theme song for ESPN’s Flyfishing America, a program on which he has made guest appearances.

Competing at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, Huttlinger matched licks with 37 of the nimblest guitarists in the world to win the 2000 National Fingerpick Guitar Championship. He has since been featured on the cover of Fingerstyle Guitar twice, and has been profiled in Guitar Player, Acoustic Guitar, Vintage Guitar and Guitar World Acoustic. He has created two series of instructional DVDs that have become Homespun Tapes top sellers. One series is his much in demand Learn To Play The Songs of John Denver (Vol. I, II & III). The other series includes instructionals of his own arrangements and practice techniques.

Peers consider Huttlinger one of today’s finest fingerstyle guitarists. Dirty Linen magazine labeled him "….a powerhouse guitarist," and Guitar Player magazine referred to his playing as "…an amazing display of all-around fingerstyle mastery. Scary stuff.”

BRIAN HENKE composes and plays his music like a painter putting images on canvas, drawing his inspiration from the world around him. An avid hiker, Henke often brings a guitar along to create a spontaneous musical response to his outdoor settings. Mother Earth (Terra), as artist, has given an immense living gallery, from the humbling spectacle of her natural wonders to the simple beauty of a treetop against a blue sky. Her majestic legacy and the magical feeling of awe and peace inspire the compositions of this award winning virtuosic fingerstyle guitarist.
Brian's 4 CDs. Many Waters, Love Song for Terra, Force of Nature and his recently released “The Nature of Light” are a cornucopia of sonic vistas. He celebrates a Grand Canyon sunset, the fireside magic of an American shaman, playful Waterfalls, the color of the wind and the light of dreams to name a few.

His unique guitar style has been called everything from Folk to New Age to Neoclassical to Pastoral or as Brian likes to call it “ a big stewpot of everything stirred up, simmered and served to taste. His music appeals to anyone who likes their music lyrical, thought provoking and performed with virtuosity. Through it all is an undercurrent of spirituality and mysticisms that Brian says is very much a part of the creative process. He has shared the bill with such various acts as "Yes", "Linda Ronstandt", "Robin and Linda Williams", “Ritchie Havens,” and many others. You may view more info at his website www.brianhenkeguitar.com

MICHAEL KELSEY pounds, pings, stings, pops, and pulls music out of every part of his instrument or anything else an arm's length or foot kick away in a funky, rhythmic style he calls progressive/aggressive acoustic guitar. Guitar wizard/singer songwriter/performance artist/entertainer all in a one-man-band package, Kelsey performs music for the eyes and ears.

A native of Lafayette, Indiana, Michael Kelsey cut his musical teeth on electric lead and bass guitars in a variety of cover bands from progressive jazz to rock. He spent five years as a recording engineer and arranger in his own studio before closing it to pursue his solo career. After placing as a finalist in a Guitar Player Magazine's national competition, he switched from electric to acoustic guitar to take advantage of the broader variety of sounds, moods and nuances available from this instrument that could increase the dimensions of his music.

In 2004 the music store chain Guitar Center held its "Guitarmageddon" Guitar competition. After three months of searching through 3000 guitar players to find the nation's best unsigned guitarist, the judges selected Michael as the winner.

Michael has toured nationally as the opening act for Blind Melon and Dishwalla. He has opened shows for such notables as Adrian Legg, Tim Reynolds, Cowboy Junkies, The Bodeans and John Wesley Harding. After performing an opening set for folk artist David Wilcox, David described Kelsey's show as 'Cirque Du Soleil' on acoustic guitar."

BETHANY YARROW & RUFUS CAPPADOCIA

Saturday, October 22
8:00 PM

Bethany Yarrow's brand of folk has certainly struck a chord across the country, and ears are beginning to perk up noticeably... HBO recently featured her version of "Black is the Color" in their series Cat House, and listeners have been knocked out by her "fascinating" and "dramatic" interpretations. Her voice has been called, "mesmerizing", "intense", "powerful", "spell-binding"..."A cross between PJ Harvey and Annie Lennox...Dido and Grace Slick..."Bethany has been dubbed a "musical medium", crossing genres and time, and in re-inventing these deeply American songs, Bethany has not only taken them into the future, she has made them deeply her own.

Although Bethany has dedicated herself to music for the past several years, she started out as a documentary filmmaker. In between her junior and senior years at college, Bethany was awarded a fellowship to go to South Africa to make a documentary about the women in the townships outside of Cape Town. What emerged was the award-winning film, "Mama Awethu!", which aired nationally on PBS and won numerous prizes at film festivals around the world including the the Sundance, Berlin, Human Rights Watch, and Bombay Film Festivals.

"I never planned on being a filmmaker," says Bethany. "I just had something to say, and it seemed like film was the best way to tell that story. Sometimes music is not the best vehicle. But right now the story I want to tell is in music. Maybe one day, when I have another story that needs telling, I'll make another film, but for the moment, making music is more than enough work!"

Rufus Cappadocia is one of the leading voices on the cello today. He has toured throughout the Americas and Europe with numerous groups and is known for his collaborations with artists from all over the world... from the Balkans to the Caribbean, from West Africa to North America. He has toured extensively with Urban Tap and The Paradox Trio. Cappadocia has just finished recording for Pest Records with Badal Roy (who played tabla with Miles Davis) and Barney Mcall (who plays piano with Gary Bartz); a Canadian release with Hugh Marsh (violin) and Bary Romberg (drums); and is currently recording a new project, Vodou Jazz Ensemble with "Bonga" Jean-Baptiste as well as a CD of unaccompanied solo cello.

Rufus was first introduced to the cello in Hamilton, Ontario at age three through the Suzuki method. By age 6 he had begun his studies with the renowned Czech cellist Zdenick Konicek. He continued to play classical music as a teen but was increasingly inspired to find a voice that would allow him to reach a larger audience and work with contemporary instrumentation.

After years of experimentation and practice Rufus now plays a self designed Five String Electric Cello that extends the bass range of the cello and through amplification expands the tonal possibilities of the instrument. Rufus has made a career of going where few cellists have gone before. He has appeared on CDs with Ross Daly, Kif, David Fiuczynski, The Paradox Trio, Odetta, Michael Blake, and Tamalalou. Rufus has also performed with Kasse Mady, Aretha Franklin, The Black Rock Coalition, Esma, Theodossi Spassoff, Seamus Egan, Eileen Eivers, Cheick-Tidiane Seck, Vernon Reid, and many more.

<P align=left><B>Rufus Cappadocia</B> is one of the leading voices on the cello today. </P>
<P align=left>Rufus was first introduced to the cello in Hamilton, Ontario at age three through the Suzuki method. By age 6 he had begun his studies with the renowned Czech cellist Zdenick Konicek. He continued to play classical music as a teen but was increasingly inspired to find a voice that would allow him to reach a larger audience and work with contemporary instrumentation. </P>
<P align=left>After years of experimentation and practice Rufus now plays a self designed Five String Electric Cello that extends the bass range of the cello and through amplification expands the tonal possibilities of the instrument. Rufus has made a career of going where few cellists have gone before. He has appeared on CDs with Ross Daly, Kif, David Fiuczynski, The Paradox Trio, Odetta, Michael Blake, and Tamalalou. Rufus has also performed with Kasse Mady, Aretha Franklin, The Black Rock Coalition, Esma, Theodossi Spassoff, Seamus Egan, Eileen Eivers, Cheick-Tidiane Seck, Vernon Reid, and many more.</P>
