The Players Guild presents

Someone Who'll Watch Over Me

By Frank McGuiness

(The Canton Repository's review is included below).

Players Guild Theatre of Canton presents the production
Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, starting October 21 2005, in the arena
theatre. Nationality and cultural differences collide in an
inspirational story of camaraderie, survival, and self-realization. A
tale of three men held captive in a cell in Beirut, this piece was
inspired by the true account of former Beirut prisoner Brian Keenan. The
prisoners struggle to maintain their sanity, humanity, and hope in a
setting devoid of all three. Inherent to this story of captivity are the
strengths of the human spirit to survive and the capacity of imagination
to set us free.
The Players Guild Production of Someone Who'll Watch Over me is
sponsored by Plant Et Art, Canton Repository and Aultman Hospital. All
Players Guild productions are produced with the generous support of the
Canton community through Arts in Stark and Ohio Arts Council. Someone
Who'll Watch Over Me performances begin October 21st, 22nd, 28th and
29th Fridays and Saturdays 8 :00 p.m.. All tickets are $10.00 general
admission. Please contact the Players Guild Box Office for more
information at 330-453-7617 or order tickets on line at
www.playersguildtheatre.com. Group rates are also available.

CANTON - Hey, did you hear the one about the Irishman, the Englishman
and the American chained in a dark cell together in Beirut?
It's not the setup to a joke, but rather the premise of "Someone Who'll
Watch Over Me," a play from Irish playwright Frank McGuiness that is
being presented by the Players Guild in its intimate Arena Theater.
Edward, an Irish journalist; Michael, an English academic, and Adam, an
American doctor, find themselves sharing close quarters in a dark and
squalid cell in Lebanon as political prisoners chained to the floor.
Captured seemingly at random and months apart, the men have no idea of
how long they will be held or whether they will ever escape these
hellish confines.
It is a deeply existential situation.
Limited in movement by heavy chains attached to the floor, sustained on
a diet of water and minimal food, with only copies of the Bible and the
Koran for reading material and nary a window to the outside world, the
men have only their thoughts, their imaginations and each other. Merely
staying sane is a priority and a challenge.
With hours and days and weeks and months to fill, the men talk a lot.
They discuss and bicker and joke. They share their dreams and fantasies
and relate their joys and heartbreaks from the outside world.
Much of it is funny, as when the trio boisterously throw back one
imaginary vodka martini after another, or when Edward and Michael
pretend to fly over Ireland in a magical car while rowdily singing
"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."
Some of it is somber. At the start of Act 2, one of the prisoners is
absent and presumed dead.
With little story-line and near-ceaseless dialogue, "Someone Who'll
Watch Over Me" is a ripe actor's showcase. Fortunately, the three men
director Steve Hoffman selected are fully up to the script's vigorous
challenges.
One of the area's most consistently riveting actors, Dick Reiss is
terrific from start to finish as the gregarious and larger-than-life
Irishman, Edward. Every subtle facial expression, every flicker in his
eyes, every modulation of his voice says so much. He is menacing, he is
lovable, he is wildly funny, he is complicated.
A veteran of local theater, Robert Fockler does perhaps his best work
to-date as the Englishman, Michael, an effete prig who loosens up
considerably as his torturous confinement continues. His performance is
focused and resourceful and full of energy.
In the second act, Michael and Edward become a stellar comic duo, an
"Odd Couple" of subterranean Beirut.
As the American, Adam, Ross Rhodes has less clowning to do. He is the
most intense of the prisoners and the one most visibly struggling to
hold himself together. His unraveling near the close of Act 1 is
convincing and troubling to witness.
At nearly three hours in length including intermission, "Someone Who'll
Watch Over Me" is something of an endurance contest for the audience as
well as the on-stage prisoners. The play, whose tempo is set entirely by
the actors and their lengthy speeches, rattles along for hours with no
obvious conclusion in sight - although a finite, and touching ending
does finally appear.
Fans of intense acting and raw theater will appreciate this production
the most.
Remaining performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets, $10,
may be ordered at (330) 453-7617. The play contains profanity and some
sexual talk.
