The internationally acclaimed Boys Choir of Harlem usher in the holiday
season with exuberant song and tremendous talent during their
performance at The University of Akron's E.J. Thomas Hall, Dec. 10 at 3
p.m.=20

=20

With a blend of classical and modern music, popular songs, spirituals,
gospel and jazz, the choir takes the audience on a musical journey of
Christmases past, present and future. From traditional sounds of the
Handel Messiah through uplifting Christmas spirituals and gospels to
Christmas classics, their stage presence is highlighted by choreography
and smooth showmanship.

Dr. Walter J. Turnbull, director, founded the choir as the Ephesus Boys
Choir in 1968. From its beginning as a small community organization of
20 boys, the Boys Choir of Harlem has grown to a major performing arts
and education institution that continues to offer hundreds of inner-city
children the opportunity to fulfill their creative and intellectual
potential. The 35 to 40 boys who appear in the boys performing choir are
selected from the 250-member Concert Choir based on academic
performance, attendance and progress at rehearsals, as well as the vocal
quality required for a performance.=20

The Boys Choir of Harlem has sung for worldwide tours, U.S. presidents,
Pope John Paul II, the 50th anniversary of the United Nations,
Grammy-winning albums and an Emmy-winning television documentary. The
choir's message of hard work, education, respect and dignity inspire its
audiences throughout the world. "The Boys Choir of Harlem is a testament
to discipline, high standards and commitment. The thought of these young
people joyously embracing the sort of challenge their music requires is
nothing less than a clarion call to optimism." (The New York Times). =20

=20

While a strict disciplinarian, Turnbull commands great respect from his
students. Turnbull, who grew up poor in the Mississippi Delta, went on
to earn a doctor of music arts degree. He became a talented artist
performing in major opera houses and a tenor soloist with the New York
Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Turnbull likes to remind
audiences that "these young men are not angels" no matter how lovely
their voices. Rather these young men have faced great obstacles and
emerged from high-risk lifestyles to sing Vivaldi's Gloria for us.
