THIS WEEK AT STOCKER ARTS CENTER FEATURES

THE FINAL FILM OF 2005 FALL FILM SERIES (The Winter/Spring 2006 Series will
be announced soon!)

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18 at 8:00 pm
"Mad Hot Ballroom"

2005 (PG) 110 minutes United States
Director/Producer: Marilyn Agrelo Producer/Writer: Amy Sewell
Cast: 5th and 6th graders from New York City Public Schools and their
Teachers

The winner of the Audience Award for Best Film at the Cleveland
International Film Festival, the Philadelphia Film Festival and the Chicago
Documentary Film Festival, "Mad Hot Ballroom" is an uplifting documentary
about the children we meet and the maturation they undergo. Children and
ballroom dancing -- you read it right. Ten years ago, two New York City
elementary schools introduced a pilot program that made ten weeks of
ballroom dancing a required course. By 2004, the year this film was made,
more than 60 schools were enrolled in the program, whose teachers are
provided by the American Ballroom Theater. At the end of the course,
schools are given the opportunity to participate in a competition. Each
school can provide five pairs (plus one alternate) to dance in five
different styles: swing, the tango, the rumba, the meringue, and the
foxtrot. "Mad Hot Ballroom" follows three schools: PS 150 from Tribeca,
where many of the children come from homes split by divorce; PS 115 from
Washington Heights, where 97% of the families are below the poverty line and
drug dealers clog the streets at night; and PS 112 from Bensonhurst, a
traditional Italian neighborhood that is now 50% Asian; from the first class
to final bow.

"Mad Hot Ballroom" proves that the tango, foxtrot, swing, rumba and meringue
do not represent the last vestiges of a dying art, but rather are alive and
flourishing in the New York City public school system where the ballroom
dance program is run for fifth and sixth graders. The film follows students
at the three schools both inside and outside of the classroom. The students
are united by a zeal for the ballroom dancing lessons. As the teachers
gently cajole their students to learn the intricacies of the various dances,
director Marilyn Agrelo intersperses classroom footage with the students'
musings on life, many of which reveal a remarkable maturity. Gender and
race boundaries disappear as focus on the competition consumes the students'
energy, and the teachers are brought to tears as they see their prodigies
turning into what one teacher touchingly terms "little ladies and
gentlemen." "Mad Hot Ballroom" is one of the year's most uplifting slices
of cinema. It is a joyous, life-affirming experience.

"Crowd-pleasing! Both comical and genuinely touching." - A.O. Scott, THE
NEW YORK TIMES

"Don't miss an opportunity to see "Mad Hot Ballroom." It will sweep you off
your feet!" - Joe Morgenstern, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

"Irresistible! A kind of "Spellbound" crossed with "Strictly Ballroom!" -
Kenneth Turan, LOS ANGELES TIMES

"Two Thumbs Up!" - Ebert & Roeper

and finally, a quote from one of our fellow NEohioPAL readers:

"I highly recommend this to anyone with a heart. it's amazing how the kids
manage to stay innocent in the face of their surroundings, and keep their
concentration on learning to dance. A fine film and one built on positivity
in the midst of all the Hollywood gorefests." - Chris Mezzolesta
