Karamu will be holding early auditions for the Spring production of =
DREAM ON MONKEY MOUNTAIN on November 17th, 18th, 19th.

TIMES: Thursday and Friday Nov. 17th & Nov. 18th @ 6:30pm (Concert =

Character Breakdown



Apparition, a white Goddess- Seeking Caucasian female actress or dancer. =
Blonde hair a plus. Very attractive and able to dance or move well. =
Seductive movements are required in some scenes. Be prepared to move =
with music for auditions.(late 20's to early 40's)



Souris (The Rat)- a felon and friend of Tigre (a cellmate on the =
island). Dark complexion. Actor must be in good shape. Souris is =
half-naked like Tigre. He is shirtless and barefoot throughout the play. =
Wears a loin cloth. (late 20's to early 40's)



Corporal Lestrade (The Straddler)- a mulatto- Seeking a very strong =
light skinned actor. Lestrade is a cross between Sgt. Waters (A =
Soldier's Play) and Emperor Jones. The actor must be in good shape. Is =
required to go partially nude in one pivotal scene.  (mid 30's to early =
50's)



Ensemble- Seeking an ensemble of African American male actors and female =
actresses for chorus and represent villagers, peasants, sick man and the =
village Inspector. Artist with with circus skills are encouraged to =
attend as well.



Please come with a headshot/resume and prepare a two to three minute =
dramatic monologue. Once cast, ALL actors must learn to perfect the West =
Indian dialect during workshops. Must be able to move and hold a tune.



Karamu House is a Non-Equity theatre. However, Equity artists are also =
welcomed to audition. College students are encouraged to audition.



NOTE: There are strong images and language in this play with some =
emphasis on the afterlife and voodooism.

DREAM ON MONKEY MOUNTAIN by Nobel Prize winner Derek Walcott =20

"Dream on Monkey Mountain" was originally commissioned by the Royal =
Shakespeare Company. It made it's New York City debut on March 14, 1971, =
Off Broadway at St. Mark's Playhouse, with Walcott collecting an Obie =
award and later toured Europe. After thirty-four years ago, this timely =
classic returns to the Jelliffe theatre once again. The  late Karamu =
alum Ron (Superfly)  'O Neal graced the institution's stage for the last =
time  as the notorious mulatto Corporal Lestrade in April 6, 1972 =
production. Praised by critics and scholars as a masterpiece, Dream on =
Monkey Mountain is a complex allegory, which, at its heart, concerns =
racial identity. Makak, a charcaol burner, lives alone on Monkey =
Mountain on a Caribbean Island. He has not seen his reflection in thirty =
years. After full moon, he wrecks a village and is thrown in jail were =
he hallucinates. He awakens and begans a quest for his true indentity.

Lisa Langford, Dramaturg. Ms. Langford originated the role of LaWanda in =
the Off Broadway production of "Stonewall Jackson's House" at American =
Place Theatre. She also appeared in "Seven Guitars" at Pittsburgh Public =
Theatre, and plays at La Jolla Playhouse, and Actors Theatre of =
Louiville. She made her Karamu debut as director for the hit Youth =
Theatre production of "Babies Having Babies" and on the Karamu stage in =
"Split Second" directed by Spivey.=20

About the Choreographer...

G. Carlos Henderson, Choreographer. Mr. Henderson is a principal dancer =
for Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theatre. He is an accomplished =
performer who has worked with artist such as Michael Jackson, Yolanda =
Adams, Quincy Jones, Martin Scorcese, Obba Babatunde, Greg Burge, =
Mercedes Ellington and Wesley Snipes to name a few. He studied dance in =
St. Louis at the Katherine Dunham Center for Performing Arts, Alvin =
Ailey in New York City, and with renowned teachers in Puerto Rico. =
Brazil, Haiti, Colombia, Sweden, West and South Africa.  =20

About the playwright...

=20

Derek Walcott founded the Trinidad Theatre Workshop in 1959 and the =
Boston Playwrights' Theatre at BU in 1981. He also established the Rat =
Island Foundation, which aims to create an international writers retreat =
on an island off St. Lucia, a kind of Breadloaf in paradise.  Walcott's =
poetic dramas have been performed all over the world and at regional =
theaters nationwide, including the Mark Taper Forum, Hartford Stage and =
Arena Stage. Walcott had already had a half-dozen plays produced in the =
West Indies before he came to New York in 1958 on a Rockefeller =
Foundation grant to study with Jose Quintero and the Phoenix Theatre =
Company. One of his most ambitious work beside the play DREAM ON MONKEY =
MOUNTAIN is the epic poem OMEROS (1990), which takes its title from the =
Greek word for 'Homer', and recalls the dramas of Homer's Iliad and =
Odyssey in a Caribbean setting. It consist of sixty-four chapters =
divided into seven books.=20

Walcott's works are being explored this Fall semester at Case Western =
University's Ethnic Studies Program under the title "Tricksters, =
Conjurers, & Gods: Religion & Culture in W. Africa & African Diaspora."=20
