RE: Nurturing the Artistic Environment: A Discussion with Theater
Artists
 Cleveland Theater Collective Planning Session
 November 21, 2005

I am pleased to have been asked to be the discussion leader for this session.
So that we can have a fruitful conversation, I am posing several questions
as an agenda. I would appreciate it if you could consider these questions
before we meet and be prepared to share your thoughts. I hope, of course, that if
there are questions and issues not presented here, that you will bring them
and add them to the agenda. I won't presume to know all the concerns, issues
and opportunities in the environment for individual theater artists.

Disclaimer
Please know that this conversation is for the benefit of CTC as your service
organization. While I am certainly interested in the subject and the work
that CTC is doing on your behalf, you should not assume that the Cleveland
Foundation is making any commitment to funding as an outcome of my participation as
discussion leader for CTC.

I look forward to our discussion.

Discussion Questions

Have you had any experiences with theater service organizations in other
cities? What were the good, bad and ugly of these experiences?

What do you find most rewarding about working in Cleveland's theater
environment?

What is most frustrating?

What sort of services might you find useful as a theater artist?
Professional development as an actor, designer, stage manager, director,
administrator, playwright, etc? For example, master classes, critiques, business
planning,, voice training, creative writing support, etc.?
Livelihood needs: Health insurance, live-work space, business loans, etc.
Self promotion support: head shots, audition prep, video taping, resume
writing, showcases, etc.

What are the different needs for individual artists with solo careers vs. the
individual within a theater organization, if any? Is this something worth
exploring?

So help me understand the difference between theater and theatre. Everyone
seems to be going British in recent years.
