This is an unsolicited review of Beck Center's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
by Mary Faktor (the actor ;-)
All I can say is WOW!
Tonight I had the sincere pleasure of attending the preview performance of
the Disney version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST at the Beck Center. At the close
of Act one AND at final curtain call, THE AUDIENCE WENT WILD! Young and old
alike were mesmerized by this fun, enchanting theater experience.
This spectacular production (Produced by Scott Spence and directed by Fred
Sternfeld) is PHENOMENAL! Aimee Kluiber's costumes are delightful, Ben
Needham's sets are impressive, Martin Cespedes' choreography and Larry Goodpaster's
music direction are tremendous and the entire cast is FANTASTIC!!
The servants-turned-furniture (Cogsworth/ Douglas Collier,
Mrs. Potts/ _Amiee Collier_ (http://www.geocities.com/aecollier/) , Lumiere/
_Larry Nehring_ (http://www.geocities.com/larrynehring/) , Chip/ Miles
Sternfeld,
Babette/ Kristin Netzband, Madame de la Grande Bouche/ Tracee Patterson,
Monsieur D'Arque/ Adam Kapis, Doormat/ Andrew Parmelee) all played their
animated characters with perfect comic timing and believability. Josh R.
Noble's Gaston was absolutely hysterical and played to the hilt. Gaston's
"lackie", Lefou (Zac Hudak) was portrayed with Jerry Lewis zeal, and Belle's father
Maurice (Bill Kelly) showed such believable love and warmth for his daughter.
Not to forget the ensemble of cutlery, plates, napkins and town folk all
portrayed their characters with commitment and enthusiasm.
Cleveland newcomer, Natalie Green could not be a more perfect Belle. This
petite beauty has a beautiful singing voice to match her acting depth and I'm
sure we'll be seeing lots more of her in future productions. Most impressive
was Dan Folino as the Beast....a very difficult role to perform with the
multiple layers and range of emotions necessary to touch our hearts. He managed
to portray both human and animal physical mannerisms, humor, embarrassment,
shame, anger and boyish awkwardness performed to perfection beneath the
fantastic makeup and prosthetics of Scott Gamble. The Magic and special effects
of Vincent Polowy made the magical transition of beast back to prince an
awesome experience.
I heartily recommend this production of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST to young and
old alike. Get your tickets FAST...I'm sure this one will be a Holiday season
sell-out.
