to Present a Master Class and Recital at the Oberlin Conservatory of=20
Music

Both free, public events take place in December


OBERLIN, OHIO (Dec. 5, 2005) =97 Charles Schlueter, principal trumpet of=20=

the Boston Symphony Orchestra, will present a master class and recital=20=

at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music on Saturday, December 10 and=20
Sunday, December 11, respectively. Both events take place in Warner=20
Concert Hall, and are free and open to the public. The Saturday master=20=

class begins at 12:30 p.m. and the Sunday recital begins at 1:30 p.m.=20
Joseph I. Markoff, a 1965 graduate of Oberlin and a member of its Board=20=

of Trustees, is sponsoring Schlueter=92s visit to Oberlin.
	Appearing with Schlueter in recital are pianist Deborah DeWolf =
Emery,=20
a 1974 graduate of the Conservatory, Professor of Trombone James=20
DeSano, and Professor of Horn Roland Pandolfi. The program features=20
works by Honegger, Enesco, Hubeau, Poulenc, Turrin, and Hindemith. For=20=

	Schlueter has been principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony =
Orchestra=20
and a member of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players since 1981. Prior=20
to his appointment in Boston, he held the position of principal trumpet=20=

in the Minnesota Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony, and the Kansas City=20=

Philharmonic. He was associate principal trumpet in the Cleveland=20
Orchestra under George Szell.
	Throughout his long and distinguished career, Schlueter has =
received=20
numerous awards and accolades. He has appeared as soloist both in=20
recital and with orchestras in France, Brazil, and Japan, as well as in=20=

the United States. He has appeared as soloist with the Boston Symphony=20=

Orchestra under the direction of Seiji Ozawa and with the Minnesota=20
Orchestra under conductors Neville Marriner, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski,=20
and Kazuyoshi Akiyama. In Japan he has appeared as soloist with the=20
Kyushu Symphony in Fukuoka under Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi, and, with=20
conductor Naohiro Totsuka, he has performed with both the Tokyo City=20
Philharmonic and the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra. He has also been=20
soloist with the Kyushu and Hiroshima Symphonies with Kazuyoshi Akiyama=20=

conducting.
	Schlueter can be heard on most Boston Symphony recordings made =
since=20
his appointment in 1981. In 1994 he began making solo recordings. The=20
first, Bravura Trumpet, was originally recorded for VOX and has been=20
recently reissued by the Charles Schlueter Foundation; it is available=20=

from the foundation. Three other recordings have been subsequently=20
released on the Kleos Classics label: Virtuoso Trumpet (2001), Trumpet=20=

Concertos (2002), and Trumpet Works (2003).
	He recently performed, along with other members of the Boston=20
Symphony, on the soundtrack for the film version of Dennis Lehane=92s=20
best-selling book Mystic River. He can be heard as well on the=20
soundtrack of the Irish historical epic Michael Collins.
	In addition to holding positions on the faculties of the New =
England=20
Conservatory and the Tanglewood Music Center, Schlueter is also in=20
demand as a teacher abroad and has held master classes in Europe,=20
Canada, Japan, and South America. Since the 1980s he has been a regular=20=

visitor to Brazil for both master classes and recitals, and has=20
appeared as soloist with orchestras in Joao Pessoa, Sao Luis, Recife,=20
Sao Paulo, Campinas, Salvador, Vitoria, and Rio de Janeiro. He has=20
taught at the University of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte,=20=

Salvador, Vitoria, and Campinas. In 1988 he helped create the=20
Northeastern Brazil Brass Master Classes in Joao Pessoa, a series that=20=

was subsequently expanded to include the areas of Sao Luis, Recife, and=20=

Belem. Since 1995 Schlueter has been visiting professor at the=20
University of Sakuyo, in Kurashiki, Japan, where, in addition to=20
teaching, he has given recitals with pianist Yasuo Watanabe and has=20
appeared as soloist with the University=92s Wind Ensemble.
	Schlueter is a 1962 graduate of the Juilliard School, where he =
studied=20
with William Vacchiano, then principal trumpet of the New York=20
Philharmonic.
