"Around Noon" Schedule for the Week of December 12, 2005

Around Noon, weekdays from noon until 1pm on 90.3 WCPN ideastreamsm,
keeps you current and connected with cultural affairs in Northeast Ohio.
Through conversations with arts and entertainment luminaries; energetic,
live performances; and eclectic, special features, host Dee Perry brings
the world of arts and entertainment as close as your radio receiver.
Following, is the Around Noon schedule for the week of December 12.=20

Monday 12-12-05 through Friday 12-16-05

Tune in this week for a special Around Noon presentation of WNYC's
"Radio Lab" with host Jad Abumrad.

Monday, 12-12-05
Who Am I?
The "mind" and "self" were formerly the domain of philosophers and
priests. Today, it's neurologists who are asking the big questions,
like "How does the brain make me?" Also featured is the story of a
woman who one day woke up as a completely different person.=20

Tuesday, 12-13-05
Stress
The body has a system for getting out of trouble. Back when trouble
meant being chased by a tiger, that system gave us a real survival edge.
But these days, "trouble" is more likely to mean waiting in traffic...
and "the system" is more likely to make us sick. Stanford University
neurologist Dr. Robert Sapolsky takes listeners through what happens on
our insides when we stand in the wrong line at the supermarket and
offers coping strategies.

Wednesday, 12-14-05
Emergence
What happens when there is no leader? Starlings, bees, and ants manage
just fine. In fact, they form staggeringly complicated societies, all
without a Toscanini to conduct them into harmony. How? We gaze down at
the bottom-up logic of cities, Google, even our very own brains.
Features author Steven Johnson, fire-flyologists John and Elizabeth
Buck, biologist E.O. Wilson, ant expert Debra Gordon, mathematician
Steve Strogatz, economist James Surowiecki, and neurologists Oliver
Sacks and Christof Koch.

Thursday, 12-15-05
Time
Radio Lab takes a spin through the history of time, making stops at the
first railroad and the first high-speed photography, which froze a horse
in mid-air. The program examines the relativity of time -- how time for
You is different than time for Me -- with physicist Brian Greene and
neurologist Oliver Sacks. =20

Friday, 12-16-05
Beyond Time
Einstein's Theory of Relativity may have implications on the concept of
choice. Namely, that there is none. Do we choose what movie to see
tonight? No. (It's already been chosen, some say.) Do we choose to
wiggle our finger? No. (Already wiggled.) This hour features
conversations with scientists and an entire cast of characters who are
all waging battle against time - or at least the common sense view of
time. =20
