  NO ROLES ARE PRE-CAST.
  Please prepare a contemporary musical theater piece, with accompaniment and in the correct key. No a cappella auditions please. Also,  no need to prepare a monologue. Although the scenes are not very long….. I will have you read directly from the script. ALL ROLES ARE COMPENSATED. I HAVE ONE EQUITY CONTRACT AVAILABLE. Callbacks will be held a s necessary. CASTING WILL BE COMPLETED BY MIDDLE OF FEBRUARY. 

  These roles are great and demand great actors and singers. Like most theatre SUNDAY is truly an ensemble show. I do hope you consider auditioning for not only George and Dot; although I certainly understand their allure. I had the good fortune of directing this piece several years ago at John Carroll University and I know that all who participate will be moved by the power, the beauty and what Sondhiem and Lapine have to say about art and love. I am thrilled to be working on this piece again with professional actors. It is a piece that has haunted me as an artist and as a human being. . . I hope that it will haunt you.  
  THE PLAY: 
  Inspired by the art of Georges Seurat, the nineteenth-century pointilliste painter, specifically a painting entitled "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte". The first act takes place in Paris, France in the 1870's; primarily on the island of La Grande Jette. George seeks to create a work of art incorporating order, design, symmetry, balance and harmony. Unfortunately, burying oneself in one's work can often cause certain unforeseen repercussions.
  In Act Two, we jump to 1984 where another George, the grandson of  the aforementioned George Seraut,  has been commissioned to create a piece of mechanical performance art to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his great-grandfather's painting. This present-day George, however, is at a creative impasse. 
  Sunday in the Park With George was originally staged as a Playwrights Horizons workshop production in July of 1983. It then opened at the Booth Theatre on May 2, 1984, with a cast that featured Mandy Patinkin (George) and Bernadette Peters (Dot/Marie). This production ran for 604 performances and went on to win Sondheim and Lapine the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

  Production and Rehearsal dates:
  Sunday in the Park with George will open on Friday, July 14 and run through 
  July 30, 2006. There will be 13 performances over this period. Rehearsals will 
  begin in late May/early June, dependent upon the cast's schedules. Rehearsals will generally be Sunday evening through Friday.  Some of the original scenery will be used in this production. 

The Roles: Almost everyone plays another character in Act II; a modern counterpart you might say. Also remember, many of these folks are somewhat physically representative of the people in Georges Seraut’s “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte”.
 George, an artist: Between 25 and 40 years old. Male.
 Dot,his mistress: Between 25 and 35. Female
 Franz, servant to Jules and Yvonne: Between 25 and 40.Male.
 Frieda, cook for Jules and Yvonne, wife to Franz: Between 25 and 45. Male. 
 Jules, another artist: Between 35 and 55. Male.
 Yvonne, his wife: Between 35 and 50. Female.
 Louise, the daughter of Jules and Yvonne: Between 12 and 15. Female.
 A Soldier: Between 20 and 30. Male.
 A Boatman: Between 35 and 60. Male.
 An Old Lady: Between 50 and 60. Female.
 Her Nurse: Between 25 and 40. Female.
 Celeste #1, a shopgirl: Between 18 and 25. Female
 Celeste #2, another shopgirl: Between 18 and 25. Female.
 A Boy, bathing in the river: Between 10 and 13. Male.
 A young Man, sitting on the bank: Between 17 and 20. Male.
 Louis, a baker: Between 20 an d 35. Male.
 Mr, An American man: Between 30 and 50. Male.
 Mrs, An American wife: Between 30 and 50. Female.
 A Woman, with a baby carriage: Between 25 and 35. Female.
 A Man, with bicycle: Between 25 and 35. Male.
