Oberlin Jazz Septet Winter Tour Includes Stops in Atlanta,
Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.

OBERLIN, OHIO (Jan. 10, 2006)=97The Oberlin Jazz Septet (OJS), an=20
ensemble representing the most outstanding student performers,=20
arrangers, and composers from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at=20
Oberlin College, embarks January 16 on a tour of seven cities in the=20
eastern and southeastern U.S.
	The OJS will perform in Richmond, Virginia, as part of the =
Richmond=20
Jazz Society=92s Guest Educator Series, and visit Huguenot High School=20=

for an outreach exchange with students. In Washington, D.C., they will=20=

appear at DC Twins Jazz and perform outreach at the Duke Ellington=20
School of the Arts. In Philadelphia, they will perform at Ortlieb=92s=20
Jazzhaus, named one of the top 50 jazz clubs in the U.S. by Downbeat=20
magazine. They will also visit the Philadelphia High School for the=20
Creative and Performing Arts. In Durham, North Carolina, they will=20
visit the Durham School of the Arts and give a performance at the=20
school=92s Weaver Auditorium. They will also visit the North Carolina=20
School of the Arts at Winston-Salem. In Jacksonville, Florida, they=20
will appear at the Caf=E9 Bolero=97where proceeds from their concert =
will=20
benefit Sickle Cell Children of Jacksonville=97and visit the Douglas=20
Anderson School of the Arts. At the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta,=20
home of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and site of last year=92s=20
Montreux-Atlanta Music Festival, the OJS will share the bill with Gwen=20=

Hughes and her trio. They will also visit Henry W. Grady High School.=20
The last stop on the tour, Louisville, Kentucky, will have them=20
performing at the Jazz Factory and visiting the Youth Performing Arts=20

	The members of the OJS are nominated each year by the jazz =

	In past years the OJS has been featured at the Detroit, =

St. Louis, Kansas City, and Denver, and at Jazz Aspen Snowmass, and at=20=

many high schools and arts programs throughout the United States. Their=20=

performance repertoire includes original compositions and arrangements=20=

Jazz at Oberlin
	The jazz studies program at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music is =
one=20
of the most popular majors at Oberlin and contributes significantly to=20=

the richness and diversity of the Conservatory and the overall campus.=20=

In December 2005, Oberlin College received what is believed to be the=20
largest gift ever given specifically for the support of jazz education=20=

at a college in the United States=97$5 million from Cleveland =

and Oberlin alumnus Stewart Kohl and his wife, Donna.
	Oberlin incorporated jazz into the Conservatory=92s curriculum =

and began offering a major in jazz studies in 1989. Today it is one of=20=

the premiere undergraduate jazz studies programs in the U.S., preparing=20=

students for careers as professional jazz musicians and for advanced=20
study in jazz. The jazz studies faculty includes composers and=20
performers who maintain active jazz careers in addition to teaching=20
lessons and classes and coaching ensembles. Numerous Oberlin alumni=20
have achieved success in the jazz idiom, among them keyboardist Ted=20
