"Cinema Paradiso: The Original Version"=20

2002 (R) 170 minutes Italy
Subtitles
Director: Giuseppe Tornatore
Cast: Philippe Noiret, Jacques Perrin, Salvatore Cascio

"Alfredo is dying." Those words jolt the successful filmmaker Salvatore
into contemplating his childhood and the hours he spent in the
projection booth of his adored local movie theater, Cinema Paradiso.
Alfredo (Philippe Noiret), owner of the movie house, befriended and
encouraged young Salvatore, known as "Toto" as he grew up in his small
Sicilian home town, ravaged by the horrors of the war. The cinema
offered escape and fantasy to the townspeople, including Toto's mother,
a grieving war widow. In one breathtaking scene a popular comedy is
projected onto the walls of the town square and the entire town glows in
the dreamy light of projected celluloid, washing away the harsh
realities of poverty and grief. As Toto grows to manhood, his friendship
with his mentor deepens. With the love and guidance of the aging man,
Toto navigates the trials of first love and builds on his ever-growing
passion for the cinema. Ultimately, it is Alfredo who convinces Toto to
leave his village to pursue his dreams of becoming a director. But as
Salvatore thinks back on his youthful romances and his innocent love of
movies, he comes to realize that perhaps his success has come at a very
high price. A beautifully filmed tribute to the power of movies that
captivated an entire generation of filmgoers, "CINEMA PARADISO" is an
unforgettable masterpiece. This version of the film recaptures footage
that was cut from the original theatrical release.

"More romantic, more emotional and ultimately more satisfying than the
teary-eyed original" - Stephen Holden, NEW YORK TIMES

And mark your calendar now for next week's film -- "ENRON: THE SMARTEST
GUYS IN THE ROOM" - Friday, January 20th at 8:00p.m.

2005 (R) 110 minutes USA =20
Director: Alex Gibney
Cast: Ken Lay, Jeff Skilling, Andy Fastow, Bethany McLean

This searing examination of the Enron accounting scandal reveals the
psychology of greed and corporate corruption that facilitated the
company's rise to power and also its fall. When Enron went bankrupt in
2001, the principals walked away millionaires - but later faced legal
proceedings and jail sentences. Meanwhile, many employees and investors
were left with nothing, not even their 401k retirement savings. Shedding
light on the new economy of the 1990s when predictions and book-cooking
flourished without actual profits, the film shows how it was not Enron
alone but a network of bankers, traders, and accountants who turned a
blind eye to the company's clearly suspicious numbers. CEO Ken Lay and
top dogs Jeff Skilling and Andy Fastow give candid interviews that
illustrate their skill at deflecting hard questions and egotistically
boasting about the company's success. In one of the company's cold and
calculated moves - which caused the California power outages, and lead
to the ousting of governor Gray Davis - Enron employees are shown
laughing at forest fires. Unbelievable footage of employees reveals
unbridled greed, lust for risk-taking, and guiltless cheating, all while
thinking they could never be caught. A remarkable documentary which
packages the events of the scandal into a cohesive story, this is one
film not to miss.

"Should be essential viewing." - John Anderson, NEWSDAY
