LOVE SUICIDE is a multi-media movement theatre piece, based on the classical
Japanese play The Love Suicides at Sonezaki. Woven around and through that
story are snippets and stories from contemporary life drawing from a number
of sources, including the personal experiences of the performers. LOVE
SUICIDE brings together classical Japan and contemporary America, the ties
of tradition and internet chat rooms. The Love Suicides at Sonezaki was a
sensation in Japan in 1703-a truly contemporary play-telling the story of a
pair of actual suicides that had occurred only weeks earlier. Here was a
play with all the appeal of a tabloid newspaper, but one that at the same
time transformed the events to poetry and tragedy. Daniel Elihu Kramer and
his ensemble combine the past and the present to investigate the disturbing
connections-both modern and traditional-between love and suicide.
Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8:00 and Sunday at 3:00
