Actors=E2=80=99 Summit Theater  announces the opening of Shame the Devil, an=
 audience=20
 with Fanny Kemble, a one-woman play by Anne Ludlum. The play is based=20
primarily  on Fanny Kemble=E2=80=99s own writings. The play will have its fi=
rst performance=20
on Thursday, January  19, and will play through January 29 at Actors=E2=80=
=99 Summit=20
Theater in downtown  Hudson. The production was originally scheduled to open=
 on=20
January 12, but the  opening was postponed because of illness.=20
The Play =20
One of the most  important actresses of the 19th Century and a member of the=
=20
renowned  Kemble-Siddons family of actors and playwrights, Fanny Kemble was=20
also an  author, journalist, and playwright. A bold and outspoken advocate f=
or=20
women=E2=80=99s  rights, Fanny Kemble became a staunch abolitionist after he=
r marriage=20
to the  American Pierce Butler. The publication of her Journal of a Residenc=
e=20
on a  Georgian Plantation, not only became an important American document, b=
ut=20
is  credited with persuading the British Parliament to withhold English=20
financial  and military support from the rebellious South during the Civil W=
ar.=20
The play is set in  Fanny Kemble=E2=80=99s apartment on the night of her ret=
urn to=20
the stage. While waiting  for the morning newspapers to come out with their=20
critiques of her performance,  Fanny tells her friends how she was drafted i=
nto=20
the theater to save her  family=E2=80=99s fortunes and the now historic Cove=
nt Garden=20
Theatre. She explains how a  money making tour of the provinces resulted in=20=
her=20
marriage to a wealthy  American.=20

MaryJo Alexander portrays Frances Anne Kemble. MaryJo  holds an MA from the=20
University of New Orleans where she was a member of the  Resident Acting=20
Company.  She has  over 25 years of experience as a professional actress and=

designer.  As an actress, MaryJo has performed at  Ensemble Theatre, Cain Pa=

Porthouse Theatre and Stan Hywet Shakespeare.  =20

Shame the Devil will open on  Thursday, January 19. Regular performances=20
continue through January 29 --  Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays at 8:00  PM a=

Sundays at 2:00  PM. =20
Tickets
Tickets are $25 on Fridays & Saturdays, $22 on Thursdays &  Sundays. College=

students and seniors receive a $4 discount at all performances.  Students=20
under age 18 are admitted for half price. Season subscriptions and  Discount=
