When Chickens Fly
Paintings by Becky Bristol
Feb. 3-25
Arts Collinwood is proud to present a one-woman show featuring paintings by Becky Bristol, an artist who recently moved to the Collinwood area. The pieces in this show were created over the past six years. Much of her work features exploding fantasy-laced panoramas populated with animals (chickens and cows) and figures (her family) surrounded by twisted roads, architecture and fauna. Bristol creates a storyboard painted in bright colors and exaggerated forms. The experience of the viewer is to be in question: about the subject matter, about oneself, and about what it is that one sees. Bristol paints the images and ideas that she has about life, and explores the cyclical manner in which it can play out. She does not see her life as a brightly-colored form, but rather as a struggle to understand, with humor and malice. Bristol's humor can best be seen in her most recent "Audubon Bird" watercolor series, where she replaces the heads of the birds with the head of her
favorite animal, a chicken.
Raised in Leroy, Ohio, Becky Bristol has lived and worked in Cleveland since 2000. This past summer, she and her husband Aaron Koonce bought a home in the North Collinwood neighborhood. Bristol received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and studied at the Sundbury Shores Art and Nature Center in New Brunswick, Canada, and the Art Institute of Boston Photography in Boston, Massachusetts. A professional mural painter, Bristol has taught mural painting at numerous institutions, including Jamison Computech and 21st Century Foundation, Art House, MacCafferty Health Clinic, Young Audiences of Greater Cleveland, Jewish Community Center, Roxboro Elementary School, Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, University of Akron, Akron Zoo, Greenview Elementary School, and the Community School of Music and Art in Ithaca, New York. While living in Portland, Oregon, Bristol was a board member and technical arts consultant for Metro Murals. She interned with the
Community Arts and Neighborhood Arts Programs, served on the grants review panel as technical assistant, and assisted in organizing workshops and database entries for the Regional Arts and Culture Council. While living in Baltimore, Maryland, Bristol executed interior murals of historic Maryland for the permanent collection at the Baltimore City Life Museum. (edited from a bio by Patsy Kline)
