About INTIMATE APPAREL
America=92s most produced play of the 2005-2006 season, Intimate Apparel
earned a number of awards, among them the 2004 New York Drama Critics'
Circle Award for Best Play, Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Play, =
the
John Gassner Award for Best Play, American Theatre Critics Association's
Francesca Primus Award and the Steinberg New Play Award. Nottage =
recently
received the PEN/Laura Pels Foundation Award for Drama for her body of =
work.
Esther, a 35-year-old seamstress who has never been married, earns her
living making intimate apparel for clients around Manhattan. But as a =
woman
living at the turn of the 20th century, she bears the dual stigma of =
being
both alone and self-sufficient. She is painfully aware of missed
opportunities for marriage since her arrival in New York 18 years =
earlier.
Now, at 35, it is unlikely her situation will change. On the day the =
play
begins, Esther receives a letter from a stranger, a native of Barbados =
who
is on the work crew digging the Panama Canal. A friend on that job =
showed
him Esther=92s photo. Now, he wants permission to write her, perhaps to =
meet,
once his stint in Panama is done. Esther, who is illiterate, relies on =
her
clients and friends to help her understand the relationship that =
develops =96
and to help her make the choices that will shape the rest of her life.=20
