AUDITIONS !!!!!!

A MAN OF NO
IMPORTANCE

Monday, Feb. 6th at 7PM
Tuesday, Feb. 7th at 7PM

Beck Center once again offers a Cleveland Musical Premiere. Stephen Flaherty
and Lynn Ahrens ("Ragtime", "Once on this Island") have given us one of the
most amazing chamber musicals in recent memory. Along with a book by reknowned
playwright Terrence McNally, they weave a tale around Alfie, a bus conductor in
1960's Dublin whose passion in life is producing classic, albeit rag-tag
theatre, for his locals~~using the parish church common room. His worship of all
things Oscar Wilde tells the audience early on that perhaps Alfie has a great
secret to hide...though his actors, co-workers, and even a doting sister do not
see the obvious. A production of Wilde's "Salome" proves both his undoing,
and ultimately, his redemption.

PERFORMANCE DATES
"A Man of No Importance" runs June 2nd through June 25th.
Performances are Fri/Sat nights and Sun. afternoon only.

REHEARSALS
Will begin appoximately April 17th.

ROLES
All roles are available except Alfie (played by Matthew Wright). There are a
totoal of TWO remaining Equity contracts available for this production. The
extra contract is made possible due to the CTC Dannis Morris contract, awarded
to Beck earlier this month. All other non-AEA roles are stipended as well.
(Age 18 and over)

Adele Rice: (18-25) Alfie's "Salome" discovery. A girl new to Dublin, w/ a
secret of her own. Mezzo
Alfie Byrne: ***Cast: Matthew Wright (AEA)***
Baldy: (45-65) A somewhat folicly impaired widower. Alfie's go-to Stage
Manager, he is a retired pub owner. Baritone.
Breton Beret: (25-35) An ominous fellow, and capable of violence. Tenor
Carney: (45-55) Alfie's leading man in all plays....the size of the role is
everything. Secretly wooing Alfie's spinster sister, and conspiring. The town
butcher, he also appears as Oscar Wilde. Baritone.
Ernie Lally: (25-40) Keeper of walk-on roles and master of the props.
Baritone.
Father Kenny: (50-65) The Head Man at St. Imelda's. Quietly wary of Alfie's
theatrical goings on. Non Singing Role.
Lily Byrne: (45-55) Alfie's very protective sister and caretaker. Feels she
cannot marry before he does. Very moral and upright, but capable of loving
deeply. Alto.
Miss Crowe: (30-40) Both actress and costume designer---she assumes the role
of Peter Pan annually. Alto.
Mrs. Curtain: (45-60) The mother to 7 children, she returns to "Salome" as
actress and choreographer--- attempting the 'Dance of the 7 Veils' as a tap
number. Alto.
Mrs. Grace: (50-60) A pious woman who's ailing husband at home keeps her at
the theatre---where acting and publicity go hand in hand. Alto.
Mrs. Patrick: (40ish) A parishoner caught between the choir loft and the hay
loft. Mezzo.
Peter: (20-25) A rehearsal asstistant....he longs for rock and roll.
Baritone, with very light singing duties.
Rasher Flynn: (45-55) Founding member and set designer. Gruff. Baritone.
Robbie: (22-30) The driver of Alfie's bus..... he is Alfie's obsession....
the Bosie to his Oscar. Robbie is just a working-class chap who likes Alfie, but
cannot embrace the poetry of Alfie's life. Bari-tenor.
Sully O'Hara: (25-30) Out of work, so now he has time to make his St.
Imelda's debut. Baritone.

This is a character driven piece, and while the vocals are important, by no
means do they outshine the need for experienced actors. This is a terrific
piece for age ranges that are not often afforded the opportunity to shine and
thrive in the musical theatre. Don't let the fact that you may not have yet heard
of "A Man of No Importance" deter you. It is an amazingly beautiful and
vibrant work.

PREPARATION
Please prepare one musical piece of your choosing. Feel free to sing
something from the musical theatre canon, or an Irish ditty if you prefer. Please
bring sheet music in your key....an accompanist will be provided. No dance attire
needed. This is a VERY light dance show.
