Wind in the Willows @ Cleveland Play House Children=E2=80=99s Theatre 2/17=20=
A treat=20
for kids=E2=80=94of all ages=E2=80=94is currently available at the Clevelan=
d Play House,=20
through March 12. Selected episodes of Kenneth Grahame=E2=80=99s The Wind i=
n the Willows =20
have been deftly adapted for presentation by local playwright Eric Schmiedl.=
=20
All your favorite characters=E2=80=94Badger, Water Rat and Mole=E2=80=94are=
 there, helping=20
Toad get over his addiction to cars, which has landed him in jail. They als=
o=20
help him re-claim his beloved Toad Hall from a batch of squatter weasels wh=
o=E2=80=99
ve moved in while he was away. =20
To be sure, Toad in the person of Kevin Joseph Kelly has brought all his =20
troubles on himself, but the boy can=E2=80=99t seem to help it! In his green=
ish suit, =20
brown derby hat, gloves and spats, he=E2=80=99s the very essence of elegance=
. Mole, =20
gently brought to life by Alicia Kahn, is in addition to being slightly dazz=
led =20
by the sunlight, a delightfully pigeon-toed creature. Water Rat isn=E2=80=
=99t at all a=20
 scary fellow, especially at the hands of Noah Varness, who lends a certain=20=
=20
dignity to the part. =20
Just when it seems all is lost, Water Rat seeks help from the older and wise=
r=20
 Badger. Everett Dodrill, with his halo of white curls and long shaggy tail=20=
=20
carefully explains to his crew just how they=E2=80=99ll manage to rid Toad H=
all of the=20
 weasels. And sure enough, they do! In a variety of smaller roles, Emily=20
Pucell and E.B. Smith display versatility and fortitude. =20
Director Seth Gordon keeps the story moving briskly, using scene changes to=20=
=20
move the action along. The set design by Jill Davis is cleverly enhanced by=20=
a =20
large painting along the rear wall of the black box arrangement in Studio On=
e=20
 that occasionally doubles as a scrim, allowing for multitudes of weasels to=
 =20
appear here there and everywhere. They even hang from the rafters! Lighting=20
is by Maureen Patterson, Sound by James C. Swonger. The costumes of Carolyn=
=20
Dickey are entirely effective in creating each animal=E2=80=99s appearance.=
 =20
The Wind in the Willows (suitable for any age) continues in the Studio One=20
Theatre, at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, through Sunday, March 12. $=

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change....
Courage to change the things I can......
And wisdom to know the difference
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.
