The Players Guild of Canton presents..

Inherit the Wind

February 17 - March 5, 2006

Creation vs. Evolution

"Now playing on the Players Guild Mainstage, "Inherit the Wind" emerges as a
sturdily crafted and thought-provoking courtroom drama. The production,
directed by Herb Crum, moves quickly and hits all the right notes." Canton
Repository, February 19, 2006 (see full review at bottom of this e-mail).

Set in 1925 Tennessee, this classic courtroom drama still rings true today
as opposing sides face off in the centuries old controversy of science vs.
religion. It portrays, in partly fictionalized form, the famous and
dramatic courtroom "Monkey Trial" battle between two famous lawyers who
volunteered to heatedly argue both sides of the case.

Its story centers around the issue of evolution vs. creationism, in the
prosecution of 24 year-old Dayton High School mathematics teacher, sports
coach and substitute science teacher, John T. Scopes for violating state law
(the 1925 Butler Act) by teaching Darwin's theory of evolution in a
state-funded school. The show's title was taken from the Biblical book of
Proverbs 11:29: "He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind."

Unique to The Players Guild production is the lengthy list of community
leaders involved with the project. A few include:

Joe Martuccio (Canton City Law Director) is portraying the role of Matthew
Brady. Joe feels fortunate to combine vocation and avocation in his
portrayal of an experienced trial attorney and elected official who loves to
eat! The Canton Law Director is a 19-year veteran of A Christmas Carol and
other diverse productions here and with North Canton, Rainbow Repertory Co.,
and Lolli's Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre.

John Kiste (Executive Director of the Canton/Stark County Convention &
Visitors' Bureau) will be playing the part of Henry Drummond. John is proud
of the strength of the local arts' community. He is honored to have a role
in what is still one of the timeliest, thought provoking plays ever written.

Les Abel (Executive Director of the Stark County Community Mental Health
Board) has lived in Canton since 1985 and is playing a juror in the show.
This is his first time on stage since he was a freshman in high school, but
has enjoyed Guild productions since coming to Canton.

In a society that is still centered around the debate of religion in the
classrooms, this play is more relevant than ever. Performances are Fridays
and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2:30pm. For tickets please call the box
office at 330-453-7617.

Hurry because one performance is already sold out!

'Inherit the Wind' antecedent to today

First=Dan>  REPOSITORY ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR

CANTON - First staged on Broadway in the late '50s, "Inherit the Wind" might
seem a dusty relic were its subject matter not so newly relevant.

The play is based on the Scopes "monkey" trial of 1925, in which a young
Tennessee high school teacher was put on trial for teaching Darwin's theory
of evolution in the classroom.

Amid heated present-day controversy about teaching creationism (renamed
"intelligent design") as science at schools, the play feels timely.

Now playing on the Players Guild Mainstage, "Inherit the Wind" emerges as a
sturdily crafted and thought-provoking courtroom drama. The production,
directed by Herb Crum, moves quickly and hits all the right notes.

Set in a sleepy Southern burg called Hillsboro during a wiltingly hot
summer, the story emerges as a contest of wills - and ideologies - between
two famed attorneys who can sense that the smalltown trial will be a
landmark.

Matthew Brady (played by Joe Martuccio) receives a conqering hero's welcome
in Hillsboro from the staunchly religious townsfolk who have hung a "Read
Your Bible" banner over the street. A blustery orator who has thrice run for
the U.S. presidency, Brady brands the evolutionists as Bible- haters and
peddlers of poison.

Brady's courtroom opponent, Henry Drummond (played by John Kiste) is
received much less enthusiastically when he arrives to defend the teacher -
and the larger issue of the freedom of ideas. The local pastor (Bill Brown)
zealously brands him "a creature of the devil, and maybe the devil himself!"

After such a dramatic buildup, Drummond is surprisingly rumpled and low-key
- until he begins railing aganst "bigots and ignoramuses" in the courtroom.

Other characters in the story include the preacher's daughter (Aurora Paige
Markle), torn between her love for the idealistic teacher on trial (Paul
Rohere) and her father's righteous Bible-beating, and the increasingly
exasperated judge (Don Jones), whose courtroom has never been so unruly.

Providing sardonic commentary from the sidelines is Hornbeck (Robert
Fockler), a jaded and self-satisfied writer from the Baltimore Herald who
has traveled to see the legal circus.

Martuccio, who is Canton's law director and an experienced trial attorney,
is commanding and entertaining as the theatrical and supremely
self-confident Brady, whose unshakable belief in the power of quoting
Scripture begins to unravel in the courtroom. Kiste is absolutely convincing
as a world-weary lawyer less interested in political grandstanding and more
interested in simply uncovering the truth.

The enthusiasm and energy of the entire cast carries the well-designed
production, which is both provocative and ripely entertaining.

Performances continue through March 5, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and
2:30 p.m. Sunday.

To order tickets, call (330) 453-7617.
