Great Lakes Theater Festival Launches

Free Touring Production of

Shaw's The Dark Lady of the Sonnets

The Festival's 2006-07 outreach touring production=20

will visit twenty venues throughout northern Ohio.

=20

Great Lakes Theater Festival (GLTF) will present George Bernard Shaw's
comedy The Dark Lady of the Sonnets (Dark Lady), a free outreach touring
production scheduled to visit twenty neighborhood venues throughout
northern Ohio, to kick off the company's 2006-07 series of Surround
programming. The production features a touring company of four actors
and is directed by Festival Associate Artistic Director, Andrew May.
The Dark Lady tour begins March 3 and continues through May 7, 2006.
All performances of the production are free and open to the public.
(Visit www.greatlakestheater.org/education/surround/ for a complete
list of performance venues, dates and times.)

"A program like the outreach touring production affords communities the
unique opportunity to experience art where they live...right in their
backyards...in their neighborhoods," remarked Daniel Hahn, Great Lakes
Theater Festival's Director of Education, when asked about the
Festival's annual tour. "There are a lot of people that don't go or are
unable to go downtown for a variety of reasons... preventing them from
experiencing the plays on our main stage. The outreach tour offers us
[GLTF] a unique opportunity to connect with these people and their
communities."

=20

"The Dark Lady of the Sonnets is an ideal play for Great Lakes Theater
Festival to send out into the community," said Andrew May. "Being able
to unlock and illuminate a great classic playwright like Shakespeare
through the eyes of another great classic playwright like Shaw, and
laugh the whole while that you're doing it, is part of what is so
exciting for me about this year's touring production. Shakespeare is
the kind of playwright that is traditionally held in high esteem, placed
high on a pedestal and revered. Shaw, however, didn't quite see it that
way. He is completely unwilling to treat Shakespeare in this fashion.
It wasn't that Shaw questioned Shakespeare's genius...he didn't. It was
just his opinion that Shakespeare wasn't the only genius on the block.
The exciting result of this bold choice offers us as audience members a
chance to glimpse of William Shakespeare and his work in a whole new
light. Shaw's portrayal of the Bard is a very human one. In Dark Lady,
Shaw essentially brings the greatest playwright that perhaps ever lived,
back to earth...down to our level...providing us an exclusive
opportunity to witness Shakespeare's creative process at work. It is an
exaggerated but fair treatment with great comic payoff and I know that
audiences will absolutely love it."

=20

In The Dark Lady of the Sonnets, George Bernard Shaw explores the comic
possibilities inherent in a chance meeting between Queen Elizabeth I,
William Shakespeare, and the mythical Dark Lady of the Sonnets during
one midsummer night on a terrace overlooking the Thames.=20

=20

The outreach touring production is an extension of Great Lakes Theater
Festival's core mission and values as a theater company, according to
May. "I think that what is most exciting about a project like the
outreach tour for me is that it is a perfect hybrid of the things that
are central to the mission of Great Lakes Theater Festival - producing
great classic plays of the highest quality possible and reaching out to
our community in consistently meaningful ways to bring diverse groups of
people closer to one another and to the classics through our education
programming. This play is a little nugget of the kind of work that we
do regularly throughout the year on our main stage and throughout
northern Ohio."

=20

The four-actor touring ensemble features Cleveland actors Magdalyn
Donnelly, Anne McEvoy, David Hansen and Michael Regnier. The design
trio of Mark Cytron (scenic design), Melanie Bowman (costume design) and
Richard Ingraham (sound design) complete the play's production team. "I
couldn't be more proud of the talented touring company that we have been
able to assemble for this project," said may of his artistic
collaborators. "It is a great challenge to live up to the words of
George Bernard Shaw...to give them life in an entertaining and
illuminating way. The company has performed brilliantly and I can't
wait to share their work with our twenty partner venues throughout
northern Ohio." =20

=20

Shaw's comedy argues for a dramatic revolution in the way that societies
regard art and artists in their communities. "In Dark Lady, Shaw is
essentially writing a treatise in favor of the creation of a nationally
funded theater to support the works of playwrights like William
Shakespeare," said May in a recent interview. "One has to remember that
this was all still just a dream in Shaw's time. It wasn't until fifty
years after Dark Lady that this actually became reality. Taken in a
larger sense, the idea of a nationally funded theater speaks to the
importance that a society assigns to art and to the way that art is
created. For theater to be funded nationally really attests to how
highly regarded this art form is in other countries. Unfortunately, it
is a rather alien concept to us here in the United States. However, I
think there are some real lessons to be learned as a community from
Shaw's 'dream become reality.' His argument for the creation of a
nationally funded theater encourages us to embrace the idea of 'raising
the artistic bar.' In Dark Lady, he challenges us as a community to
provide a sustainable environment for the arts where artists are free to
take bold risks, incite important dialogues around difficult issues and
pose important questions to one another and to the larger populous about
the community and world in which we live. It is, in some sense, a
mini-commercial for thinking about bigger and better things
artistically. Who better to write a commercial in support of such noble
ideas and of the public's responsibility to support that environment
than George Bernard Shaw? He was quite the visionary."

=20

The Dark Lady of the Sonnets is a forty-five-minute program that
includes an introduction and post-performance discussion. Times and
dates are subject to change. Call individual venues for more
information about the performances. (Visit
www.greatlakestheater.org/education/surround/ for a complete list of
performance venues, dates, times and contact information.)=20

=20
