HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WVIZ/PBS PROGRAM APPLAUSE FOR March 2006=20

Emmy Award-winning ideastreamsm production focuses on Northeast Ohio =
arts and cultural activity=20

APPLAUSE, the Emmy Award-winning production of WVIZ/PBS ideastreamsm =
hosted by Dee Perry spotlights Northeast Ohio's rich arts and cultural =
scene. Featured this month on APPLAUSE: Pianist Gerardo Teissonni=E8re; =
an update on the East Cleveland Public Library expansion; a preview of =
the Cleveland International Film Festival; jazz saxophonist and composer =
Bobby Selvaggio; and the Cradle of Christianity exhibit at the Maltz =
Museum of Jewish Heritage.

Now in its eighth season, APPLAUSE is broadcast on WVIZ/PBS each =
Thursday at 7:30 pm. Due to special programming on WVIZ throughout =
March, some installments of APPLAUSE will vary from the regular =

Pianist Gerardo Teissonni=E8re begins the month's APPLAUSE schedule with =
the distinction of being the first person to perform and record in the =
KeyBank studio at Idea Center. Mr. Teissonni=E8re, an instructor at the =
Cleveland Institute of Music, is regarded as one of the most esteemed =
and sought-after piano pedagogues in the United States today.  In =
another segment, local wildlife artist Adam Grimm visits to talk about =
his work, including images that will appear on the National Wild Turkey =
Federation's 2006 national stamp.  Finally, APPLAUSE takes a tour =
through the Malcolm Brown Gallery, as it celebrates its silver =
anniversary. Since its inception in 1980, the gallery has been at the =
forefront of exposing audiences to a variety of artistic achievers.  The =
gallery is currently featuring the works of the first artist to exhibit =
at the space a quarter of a century ago - gallery namesake, Malcolm =

The spotlight this week turns to the East Cleveland Public Library, an =
organization in the midst of an expansion. Greg Reese, director of the =
ECPL, will give an update on the progress at the branch and what this =
expansion will mean to its community. This episode of APPLAUSE also =
features an interview with award-winning Akron Beacon Journal syndicated =
cartoonist Chip Bok. Then, Dee interviews artist Gary Bukovnik, =
discussing his latest collection of watercolors on view at the Bonfoey =
Company. =20

The 30th Annual Cleveland International Film Festival kicks off tonight =
(and runs through March 26). CIFF artistic director Bill Guentzler =
provides a preview of the festivities and some of the films. Then, local =
writer/actor/director David Hansen performs a scene from his =
award-winning one-man play "I Hate This". (Hansen has also worked with =
ideastream in adapting his play into a full-cast radio drama. It can be =
heard in a special primetime broadcast on March 20 at 8pm on 90.3 WCPN.)

Jazz saxophonist and composer Bobby Selvaggio stops in at the Idea =
Center to talk with Dee about growing up as the son of local jazz legend =
Pete Selvaggio, the son's passion and affinity for the music, and what =
it's been like sharing his experiences by teaching others. Mr. Selvaggio =
will also perform a few of his original pieces. Then, it's a rare, =
behind-the-scenes look at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. How =
does the museum prepare for upcoming exhibits? Where do they store the =
pieces that aren't on display? The APPLAUSE cameras will take viewers on =
a tour they won't be able to get anywhere else.

            APPLAUSE this week features digital artist Ben Kinsley, who =
specializes in sound and music performance, video, animation, and =
installation. Kinsley visits APPLAUSE to discuss his unique multi media =
creations, some of which were included in the Cleveland Museum of Art's =
"NEO 2005: The Art and The Artists" show and are on display this month =
at the Hyacinth Gallery. Then, local, self-taught artist Hector Vega =
stops by to talk about his signature style of bold colors and geometric =
patterns. Plus, the Temple Scroll (Dead Sea Scroll) is a part of the =
Cradle of Christianity: Treasures from the Holy Land exhibit at the =
Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage beginning April 1. The exhibition marks =
the first time it has ever been on display outside of Israel. The =
Museum's executive director will be in-studio to share the history of =
this artifact, its importance to the newly opened museum, and to =
northeast Ohio.
