Clague Playhouse will present the Canadian comedy, Artichoke, by Joanna M. Glass, opening Friday, March 3, for a run of 14 performances through March 25.

The Canadian playwright has been produced across North America, England, Australia, Ireland and Germany. She has also written two novels and her 1984 play - Play Memory received a 1984 Tony award nomination.

Artichoke premiered at the Long Wharf Theatre in 1975 starring Colleen Dewhurst. It was well received across Canada as a distinctly Canadian play, evoking graphic images of the Prairies during the Depression. In 1979, the play was presented in New York at the Manhattan Theatre Club. The show was a critical success and launched the career of a young Amanda Plummer into film and stage stardom.

Artichoke centers on a married couple. The comedy offers a touching and funny glimpse into the lives of a farmer and his wife and how hard it is to stay in love.

“It is a wonderful script”, states director Doug Farren who has directed the show before. “The definite strength of the script is in the dialogue and the mood of the piece. Artichoke hits home as a compassionate comment on the inability of people, living together, to reach out to each other.”

Director Farren has cast an actual married couple to play the married couple in his production. “By choosing to cast the show this way, I hope to bring a considerable amount of depth and chemistry that will transfer from their actual real life marriage to the stage.”

Joe and Peggy Gibbons from Lakewood will play the married couple. They have performed twice together before on stage, but this is their first time playing a married couple.

“The husband and wife we play are at odds, and that presents a definite acting challenge since we get along so well”, explains Peggy. Ms. Gibbons was recently seen on the Clague stage in Sweet and Hot-the Music of Harold Arlen. Adds Joe, “The greatest benefit of doing this show together is being able to spend the quality time together. Whether we are running lines, or discussing the characters, it is time we can cherish together. And we know it will be helpful to communicate that on stage.”

Others in the ensemble cast of 7 include; John Hnat of Bay Village, Jessi Malicki of Coulmbia Station, Sheldon Lawrence of Westlake, Tyson D. Rand of Cleveland and Dennis Brown of North Olmsted.

The rustic farmhouse is being designed by Ron Newell, and Kristen Buchs is designing
the lights. The production is being co-produced by Bernice Bolek and Gig Giauque.

Regular performances are scheduled at 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays-Saturdays and at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $ 10.00 for Thursday performances and $11.00 for all other shows. Discounts for group ticket sales and senior citizens are available. Free parking is available adjacent to the theatre. For further information or reservations, call the Clague box office Wednesday through Sunday from 1-6pm at 440-331-0403.
