Arts Collinwood gallery presents new work by a local talent in an exhibition that will resonate with all those intrigued by the quintessentially-Cleveland atmosphere of the manufacturing era and its residual legacy. In this series of abstract industrial portraits, the post-industrial landscapes of present-day Cleveland are illustrated in vivid colors, representing recent memory and the unwillingness of the past to slip away quietly. With vigorous brushwork complementing a vibrant color palette, simultaneously evoking both haunting, deserted landscapes and the immediacy of urban graffiti art, Pat Haggerty brings a fresh artistic perspective to a familiar scene.
A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, Haggerty describes his work as an attempt to portray the existential, expressionistic aspects of the industrial landscape as a reflection of our society and our time. He focuses on abstract expressionism, while honing his skills on landscape, portraiture and still lifes. In this work, we see the combination of the two, in stark use of color and geometry, planes and angles, to convey a once-teeming cityscape now little more than the shadow of a grinding, mechanical, functional past still looming on our skyline.
Join us for a wine and cheese reception Friday, March 10 from 6-9pm to meet the artist and view his work. On exhibit through April 8, 2006.
