FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Acclaimed Percussion Ensemble Kroumata Performs at Oberlin College=20
April 6

OBERLIN, OHIO (March 24, 2006) =97 Kroumata, the Swedish percussion =
group
known around the world for moving percussion from the back row of the=20
orchestra
into the limelight of center stage, performs Thursday, April 6, at=20
Finney Chapel, on
the Oberlin College campus. The concert, part of the College's Artist=20=

Recital Series,
begins at 8 p.m.

The program includes John Cage=92s Third Construction, Arne Melln=E4s=92s=20=

Fragile,
Morgan =C5gren=92s She Came, She Went, Iannis Xenakis=92s Okho, John=20
Eriksson=92s Tr=E4d (Tree),
and Georg Katzer=92s Schlagmusik 2. Finney Chapel is located on the=20
southwest corner of
Route 511 (Lorain Street) and North Professor Street.

The Oberlin concert will feature five of Kroumata=92s six members: Roger=20=

Bergstr=F6m, Ulrik Nilsson (standing in for John Eriksson, who has a =
work=20
on the program), Anders Holdar, Leif Karlsson, and Johan Silvmark.
Since its founding in 1978, Kroumata has performed more than 200 world=20=

premieres, including 146 by Swedish composers; many of these were=20
commissioned works. Kroumata is credited with greatly expanding the=20
repertoire for percussion.

The ensemble has toured more than 35 countries and has attracted a=20
loyal following in Sweden. The group has its own headquarters in=20
Stockholm, a former cinema that now serves as both concert hall and=20
studio. Kroumata also has performed in less conventional venues, such=20
as a quarry in northern Sweden. Many audiences have met Kroumata in=20
appearances with symphony orchestra; others as an integral part in a=20
performance of modern dance.

Among the group=92s 20 CD recordings is a recent collection of favorite=20=

encores ranging from Bulgarian dance to foxtrot and from the lyricism=20
of Alfv=E9n=92s Skogen to the sultriness of a tango. Most of the pieces=20=

were composed or arranged by members of Kroumata, and they fully=20
exploit all the colors, nuances, and spectacular effects of the=20
ensemble. Writing in Fanfare, Paul Rapoport called Kroumata =93a truly=20=

exhilarating group=94 that has =93a thorough understanding of the nature =
of=20
sound and a limitless imagination informs what it does.=94

Tickets for the concert are $7 for students; $16 for those with an=20
Oberlin I.D. (faculty, staff, alumni, and parents), area educators, and=20=

senior citizens; and $20 for the general public. Tickets purchased at=20
the door on the evening of the performance are an additional $3. To=20
purchase tickets in advance, call the Central Ticket Service box office=20=

(440-775-8169) or visit the CTS box office, located in the lobby of=20
Hall Auditorium, 67 North Main Street, Oberlin.
