HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WVIZ/PBS PROGRAM APPLAUSE FOR APRIL 2006=20

Emmy Award-winning ideastreamsm production focuses on Northeast Ohio
arts and cultural activity=20

APPLAUSE, the Emmy Award-winning production of WVIZ/PBS ideastreamsm
hosted by Dee Perry spotlights Northeast Ohio's rich arts and cultural
scene. Features this month on APPLAUSE include a conversation with
Timothy Rub, the newly appointed Cleveland Museum of Art executive
director; a tour of The Alcazar hotel; and a look at this year's Tri-C
JazzFest.

Now in its eighth season, APPLAUSE airs on WVIZ/PBS ideastream Thursdays
at 7:30 pm, with repeat broadcasts on Saturdays at 6:30 pm and Sundays
at 1pm.

In an exclusive interview, APPLAUSE host Dee Perry talks with Timothy
Rub, the Cleveland Museum of Art's newly appointed executive director,
about his decision to take the Cleveland position, featuring news on his
plans for the Museum. In another program segment, acoustic guitarist
Doug Wood was recently recorded performing in Idea Center's newly
appointed KeyBank studio. Wood, a popular performer on the college
circuit, combines the subtleties of folk and jazz music with the
intensity of acoustic rock.  And, Dr. Henry Adams, professor at Case
Western University and author of "Viktor Schreckengost and 20th Century
Design," joins Dee Perry for a conversation about the largest exhibition
in history organized in celebration of Schreckengost's 100th birthday
this year.

Thursday, April 13, 7:30 pm. (repeats Saturday, April 15, 6:30pm and
Sunday, April 16, 1pm)

>From 1942 to 1945, Cleveland Institute of Art graduate Don Allen was
much sought after by U.S. fighter pilots to create airplane nose art -
the genre of painting used to decorate combat aircraft. Allen joins Dee
Perry for an extraordinary perspective on World War II, and a look at
the artist's personal war time achievements. In another program segment,
the Alcazar hotel, a Cleveland Heights landmark dating back to 1923,
gets special APPLAUSE treatment as Sandra Martin, manager of the
historic hotel takes viewers on a behind-the-scenes tour. Included in
the commentary are stories from the establishment's long history of
service to entertainment and other luminaries, and a "who's who" list of
Alcazar guests. "SLAM U!", a workshop and poetry-slam program organized
by the Playhouse Square Center's Arts Education department, has helped
area high school students with speaking and performance skills.  Dee
Perry talks to members of Cleveland's National Youth Poetry Slam team
before they head off to compete in New York City.

The Tri-C JazzFest kicks off April 26 - 30 and the festival's managing
director Beth Rutkowski joins Dee Perry to talk about this year's
schedule of concerts and events. In another program segment, APPLAUSE
cameras focus on one of Tower City's newer tenants - Lake Erie Artists,
an art gallery that features local artists working in a variety of
media. Gallery director Evelyn Copan Bute showcases recent installations
and introduces area artists whose works might be right at home in
viewers' homes or offices.=20
