FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cleveland Opera and The Cleveland Play House

Co-Present Paul Dresher's The Tyrant

Regional Premiere To Open FusionFest

April 3, 2006 . Cleveland. Cleveland Opera will close its 30th Anniversary
Season with the regional premiere of composer Paul Dresher and librettist
Jim Lewis' new opera, The Tyrant, co-presented with The Cleveland Play
House. Directed by Melissa Weaver and performed by tenor John Duykers and
the Paul Dresher Ensemble, The Tyrant will mark the opening of FusionFest,
Cleveland's new multidisciplinary arts festival. Performances are May 2, 3,
5, 6, and 7, 2006 in the Bolton Theatre at The Cleveland Play House complex
with Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and
Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Though the production is sold out, waiting list
seating is available on a standby basis by calling the Cleveland Opera box
office at 216/575-0903 ext. 221.

The Tyrant opened to rave reviews at its May, 2005, world premiere in
Seattle, where it was hailed as "absolutely mesmerizing" and "a tour de
force." (Seattle Times). Inspired by Italo Calvino's short story, A King
Listens, The Tyrant tells the story of a king who, paralyzed by fear of
being overthrown, physically cannot leave his throne and experiences his
kingdom only through sound. As the king listens to his castle, his fears
manifest in each noise out of place, driving him slowly into madness.

Known for his exceptionally rich tenor voice, John Duykers, who will reprise
the role of the Tyrant in Cleveland, won critical acclaim for originating it
in the world premiere production with the Seattle Chamber Players.
Described by Seattle Times as "effective in a role he has made so wholly his
own," and as having a "pliant and suitably majestic tenor .," the score of
The Tyrant was composed specifically to draw out the full range and depth of
Mr. Duykers' voice.

Now entering in its 30th season, Cleveland Opera is the city's leading
professional opera company and a cultural jewel of Northeast Ohio. A member
of OPERA America, the company produces dynamic classical and contemporary
repertoire as well as new works and is home to Cleveland Opera on Tour, an
extensive education and outreach program. A resident company of the
Playhouse Square Center, Cleveland Opera has over 3,000 subscribers and
touches an annual audience of more than 98,000 theatergoers of all ages.
The 2005-06 Season is sponsored by Cleveland Foundation, Ohio Arts Council,
MBNA, The Plain Dealer, Cleveland Magazine, and WCLV.

The Company

John Duykers, the Tyrant, made his professional operatic debut with Seattle
Opera. Since then he has appeared with many of the leading opera companies
of the world including Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Houston
Grand Opera, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Netherlands Opera, the Grand Theatre
of Geneva, Frankfurt Opera, Opera de Marseille, the Canadian Opera Company,
Santa Fe Opera, Los Angeles Opera, San Diego Opera, and the Opera Company of
Philadelphia. Mr. Duykers is particularly known for his performances of
contemporary music, having sung in nearly 70 contemporary operas including
41 world premieres. He created the role of Mao Tse-Tung in John Adams'
Nixon in China, which he went on to perform throughout the world. He has
been a frequent performer at the Lyric Opera of Chicago and likewise has
appeared regularly with San Francisco Opera and Los Angeles Opera. Mr.
Duykers has had a close association with a number of contemporary composers,
notably John Adams and Philip Glass. He sang the premiere of Glass' In The
Penal Colony in 2001 and Galileo Galilei in 2002. Mr. Duykers has appeared
frequently with symphony orchestras throughout the United States including
the National Symphony Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, Los Angeles
Philharmonic, and the Kansas City, Tri-Cities, Sacramento, Santa Rosa, and
the San Jose symphonies. His appearances at major festivals have included
Aspen Music Festival, the American Music Theater Festival, the Gaudeamus
Music Week, Kaitheater Festival, the Brooklyn Acadamy of Music's "Next Wave"
Festival, Spoleto Festival USA, the London International Festival of
Theatre, Internationale Teatrerfestival in Copenhagen, Edinburgh Festival,
the Festival Internacional de Teatro de Granada, and Juneau Jazz and
Classics. Upcoming performances for Mr. Duykers' include premieres of
Bitter Harvest Kurt Rohde for Kent Nagano and the Berkeley Symphony, a new
version of the opera Kali by Tony Prabowo, Jarrad Powell, and Goenawan
Mohamed, and Janacek's Cunning Little Vixen with San Francisco Opera in
June. Mr. Duykers has received critical acclaim in numerous productions of
George Coates Performance Works, the Paul Dresher Ensemble and the A.Ga.Pe.
Performance Group which have been seen on the worlds' most important
contemporary music and theater stages. He is currently developing an opera
program for the School of Music at the California Institute of the Arts.

Paul Dresher, Composer, is an internationally active composer noted for his
ability to integrate diverse musical influences into his own coherent and
unique personal style. He pursues many forms of musical expression
including experimental opera and musical theater, chamber and orchestral
composition, live instrumental electro-acoustic music performances, musical
instrument invention, and scores for theater, dance, and film. His
contemporary chamber group, the six-member Paul Dresher Ensemble
Electro-Acoustic Band, recently performed its Carnegie Hall debut,
performing a concert of Dresher's chamber works as part of the "In Your Ear
Festival," curated by John Adams. Upcoming premieres include The Tyrant, a
solo chamber opera for tenor John Duykers and Pierrot ensemble, a Wallace
Alexander Gerbode Foundation commission for the San Francisco Chamber
Orchestra, and the re-mounting of his seminal music theater work, created
with writer/performer Rinde Eckert, Slow Fire. Mr. Dresher has received
commissions from the Library of Congress, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra,
Spoleto Festival USA, the Kronos Quartet, the San Francisco Symphony,
California EAR Unit, Zeitgeist, Walker Arts Center, University of Iowa, Meet
the Composer, and the American Music Theater Festival. He has performed or
had his works performed throughout North America, Asia, and Europe.
Engagements have included appearances with the New York Philharmonic and at
the Munich State Opera, the Festival d'Automne in Paris, the Brooklyn
Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival, the Minnesota Opera, Arts Summit
Indonesia '95, Festival Interlink in Japan, and five New Music America
Festivals. Mr. Dresher has also worked extensively with many choreographers
including Margaret Jenkins, Brenda Way/ODC San Francisco, Nancy Karp &
Dancers, Wendy Rogers Dance Company, and Allyson Green Dance. His recently
completed composing projects include Snow in June, a collaboration with
playwright Charles Mee and director Chen Shi-Zheng, commissioned by the
American Repertory Theatre; and a collaboration with former Kronos Quartet
cellist Joan Jeanrenaud on his cello concerto Unequal Distemperament. In
2001 Mr. Dresher composed Sound Stage, a music theater work performed on a
set made entirely from very large-scale invented musical instruments.
Commissioned and performed by the new music ensemble Zeitgeist (with support
from the Walker Art Center), the piece includes large-scale invented
instruments, virtuoso performances on traditional instruments, vivid
lighting design, and writing and direction by Rinde Eckert, combining
deadpan physical humor with a spare, wry text. Born in Los Angeles in 1951,
Mr. Dresher received his Bachelor of Arts in Music from UC Berkeley and his
Master of Arts in Composition from UC San Diego where he studied with Robert
Erickson, Roger Reynolds, Pauline Oliveros and Bernard Rands. He has had a
longtime interest in the music of Asia and Africa, studying Ghanaian
drumming with C.K. and Kobla Ladzekpo, Hindustani classical music with
Nikhil Banerjee as well as Balinese and Javanese music. Recordings of his
works are available on the Lovely Music, New World (with Ned Rothenberg),
CRI, Music and Arts, 0.0. Discs, BMG/Catalyst, MinMax, Starkland, and New
Albion labels.
