The answer, of course, is obvious:  theatre will adapt or it  will die.
 
As to audience development, I was taught many years ago that the trick is  
NOT to "give em what they want" . . .  but, rather, to make them want what  you 
have.  No easy task for even the most talented company.  But it  can be done.
