            MELISSA FERRICK
with ALLISON MILLER
Opening Act KINNIE STARR

  Thursday, April 20
8:00 PM
Singer/songwriter Melissa Ferrick emerged in 1994 as part of a group of new female alternative singer/songwriters, much in the vein of Liz Phair. Ferrick began singing in coffeehouses after dropping out of college, eventually winding up in Boston. Her major breakthrough arrived one night when she replaced Morrissey's opening act less than an hour before showtime. Ferrick's performance impressed Morrissey and he invited her to open for him during the rest of the tour. The tour earned her a small cult following as well as a contract with Atlantic Records. She released her debut album, Massive Blur, in 1994 to good reviews; the critical reception for her stripped-down second album, Willing to Wait, earned even stronger reviews. Everything I Need followed in 1998, and in early 2000 Ferrick returned with Freedom. Capturing her enigmatic stage persona, Ferrick issued Skinnier, Faster, Live at the B.P.C. in early 2001. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
NYC-based drummer, Allison Miller, defies all boundaries, playing many styles of music well. She brings her individual sound to many types of music while preserving their stylistic authenticity. Allison goes from playing with pop legend Natalie Merchant to touring Europe with avant-garde saxophonist Marty Ehrlich and legendary organist Doctor Lonnie Smith. She approaches each of these musical situations with her own stylistic identity and a creative, fresh, and energetic approach. Chosen as "Rising Star Drummer" in Downbeat's 53rd Annual Critics Poll "The superb drumming of relative newcomer Allison Miller revealed that high-quality talent continues to flow into the jazz mainstream" - Don Heckman, LA Times
Enigmatic yet as open as the juiciest pulp novel atop your bedside table, Canada's Kinnie Starr pushes artistic boundaries by merely ignoring them.
Starr began making her presence felt around 1995 with edgy visual arts, graffiti, rhymes, outspoken race and gender politics, decidedly unorthodox performances, stunning good looks and envelope-pushing, beat-slamming recordings. This combination earned her a well-deserved and devoted fan base, a record contract with Mercury/Island/DefJam (1996-1999), and an immediate connection with critics and consumers alike.
Starr's new record finds more emphasis on the music and less on pointed political statements. "This is the first truly professional record I've made, in the sense that I'm really getting into arranging, melodies, hooks and pop production," she says.

        JESSIE COLIN YOUNG

  Friday, April 21
8:00 PM
Jesse Colin Young began his music career in New York City in the 1960s. He was a fixture at Greenwich Village coffee houses and released two solo albums during that period: "Soul of a City Boy" and "Young Blood". Following the solo releases, Jesse Colin Young formed The Youngbloods and achieved a worldwide Top Ten hit with the anthem "Get Together" followed by "Sunlight" and "Darkness, Darkness", both written by Young for the Youngbloods critically acclaimed album, "Elephant Mountain".
After releasing seven albums with The Youngbloods, Jesse Colin Young returned to solo recording in 1972 with the album "Together", which charted in Billboard's Top Albums. Young followed it with another solo album, "Song For Juli", released in September 1973. "Song For Juli" stayed on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart for nearly a year and was followed onto the chart by "Light Shine" in 1974, "Songbird" in 1975, "On The Road" in 1975, and "Love On A Wing" in 1976.
Jesse Colin Young was instrumental in establishing the "No Nukes" movement, a grassroots effort to make the world a safer place, and he closed the 1979 No Nukes concert and movie joined by Jackson Browne, Steve Stills, Graham Nash, and everyone else in attendance singing "Get Together". Jesse Colin Young also recorded a new solo version of "Get Together" for the 1988 motion picture, 1969, during this period. Throughout his career Young has collaborated with noted songwriters such as Wendy Waldman, Michael McDonald, and Danny O'Keefe. Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant recorded the song "Darkness, Darkness," originally on The Youngbloods' "Elephant Mountain" in 2002, and it was nominated for a Grammy as Best Rock Vocal. The song was also used in the James Cameron directed, Disney distributed, Ghosts of the Abyss currently on cable and in IMAX theatres.
Jessie Colin Young has performed on behalf of American Indians; he has sung in prisons; and he has used solar energy for his concerts. He has appeared in benefits on behalf of organizations ranging from the Dream Foundation to the Kona Pacific Waldorf School, which Jesse and his wife Connie helped to build, and where they both teach music.

        JAMES KEELAGHAN

  Saturday, April 22
8:00 PM
James Keelaghan is one of Canada's international stars. His passionate mix of roots rock, Americana, and contemporary folk has established Keelaghan's presence in Europe, Australia, and North America. While growing up in western Canada, Keelaghan was an avid follower of music and theater, but studied history while attending the University of Calgary. Music took over, however history would be a major catalyst in Keelaghan's warm-hearted songwriting.
Keelaghan's ballads on his 1987 debut Timelines played into such beauty, capturing historical Canadian events such as WWII and the Canadian Pacific Railroad. Three years later, he issued Small Rebellions, but it was his Green Linnet debut My Skies (1993) that garnered him the highest praise. My Skies won a Juno award for Best Roots Traditional Recording and was accepted by the Alberta Recording Industry Association. He earned a second Juno nomination for his fourth album, A Recent Future (1995), in 1997. That same year, he and Latin guitarist Oscar Lopez recorded the Latin/Celtic fusion -- a style they named "Celtino" -- on Compadres. Keelaghan earned a third Juno nomination for Best Roots Tradional Recording and maintained a work in progress for the Jericho Beach Music label. His most personal album, 1999's Road, was a return to folk roots; Home (2002) followed in its footsteps. Aside from making music, Keelaghan broadcasts on CBC and hosts two shows on CKUA in Alberta,
as well as playing in countless festivals worldwide. He was a founding board member of the North American Folk Alliance and his song "Cold Missouri Waters" was covered by Cry Cry Cry (Lucy Kaplansky, Dar Williams, Richard Shindell) on their 1998 self-titled release. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide
