About the Joyce R. Whitley ArenaFest Festival of New Plays . . .
The plays chosen for ArenaFest must focus on themes of the African American
experience. Ten plays are selected out of the works sent in. The two week
festival of stage readings are double billed and are performed, Mondays-Fridays
at 6pm in the Arena Theatre.. . Admission is free. No readings on Good
Friday, April 14, 2006.
The moderator will conduct a post-discussion after each reading with
audience and playwright (if present).
Fifty to fifty-five plays were submitted last summer and fall for
consideration in the 14th Annual R. Joyce Whitley Arenafest Festival of New Plays for
this year. The fest runs April 10, thru April 21, 2006. The festival is named
in honor of the late R. Joyce Whitley, a major contributor to Karamu House.
The ArenaFest Festival of New Plays are performed as staged readings of new
and well known playwrights.
Prolific playwright Sherry Shephard first submitted regional theatre
favorite "Waiting to Be Invited" to the festival. Award winning playwright and
Clevelander Bridgette Wimberly (Off B'way's "Saint Lucy's Eyes") works such as
"Seperation of Blood" and "7 Sisters" were part of the festival the past two
years. Gregory S. Carr's "Johnnie Taylor is Gone" read at the festival two years
ago and was one of Karamu's biggest hits during the 2005/2006 season.
Actor/playwright and Clevelander Cornell Calhoun III had two festival readings
produced, one was"Grand Prix" during the 2002/2003 season. His play "East 43rd,
read last year is currently a semi-finalist in the 2006 National Playwrights
Conference at the prestigious Eugene O' Neill Theatre Center in Conneticut..
