Cleveland, Ohio - The Beck Center for the Arts Youth Theater presents
Once Upon A Mattress, April 28 - May 9. You won't want to miss this
fun-filled theater experience with memorable music by Mary Rodgers and
laughable lyrics by Marshall Barer. A chance to be reintroduced to this
timeless tale written by Jay Thompson, Marshall Barer and Dean Fuller
and directed by Beck's own Associate Director of Theater Education, Dawn
Youngs.

Once Upon A Mattress, revived on Broadway in 1998 with Sarah Jessica
Parker, tells the "real" story of The Princess and the Pea. Queen
Aggravain, has created an impossible royalty test for every princess who
has come to ask the hand of her son, Prince Dauntless the Drab. She has
also decreed that no one in the kingdom may marry until her precious son
has found a bride. While the knights and ladies of the kingdom are not
happy about this decree, Lady Larken and Sir Harry have a 'growing'
reason to be alarmed by it and set out to find a princess who can get
past the queen's scheme. Enter Princess Winnifred the Woebegone, a
perfect match for Prince Dauntless and his overbearing mother. . . and,
well, after several misadventures and one very uncomfortable night of
counting sheep. . . they all live happily happily happily ever after.

"Working with the students at the Beck Center has been very
rewarding." says Youngs, "We have a tremendous group of kids who not
only work hard at putting together the best production they can, but who
have also come together as a family to support one another and create an
atmosphere of love and acceptance. It is great to see that the Beck
Youth Theater program still offers the feeling of home that I felt as
student here many years ago."

Cast members for Once Upon A Mattress are students from the Beck
Center's Theater Education program. They have participated in the
Fundamentals of Theater class and other "core" theater classes for
children available at the Beck Center for the Arts. In both
fundamentals and core classes, students explore basic acting skills
through improvisation and theater games, as well as develop singing and
acting techniques, and study method acting. In addition, they are
introduced to theater appreciation and basic theater terminology.

Once Upon A Mattress opens April 28 and runs through May 9. Show times
are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. Tickets
are $10 for adults and $8 for children. Discounted rates are available
for groups of 15 or more. Weekday matinees are scheduled for Tuesdays,
May 2 and 9. Tickets can be purchased through the Beck Center Box
Office at (216) 521-2540. The Beck Center for the Arts is located just
ten minutes west of downtown Cleveland at 17801 Detroit Avenue in
Lakewood.
